I'm a member of a boardgame website and it's frequented by a lot of Americans. They are far too easy to wind up when you call them 'precious' or ask them to not take things so seriously. I swear, it's like a moving rag to a bull.

I found the phrase "how are The Colonies these days" used to do the trick

Strangely
the few Americans I've met in real life have never taken offence to having their homeland referred to as 'The Colonies'. Online, certainly, real life, not so much. Strange that.
