Dave Gilmour did a huge amount to help, and protect Syd Barrett after he went lost the plot. Firstly in helping his solo career, and then once that was obviously not going to work, making sure that Syd was paid everything he was entitled too and that no one took advantage of him.

So, Dave Gilmour is a bit of a numpty, but a bloody good friend.
