Sheffield
I know someone posted below about there being little crime in sheffield and a lot of people have posted about the police doing feck all, so here's a bit of reassurance.

I've been living in some student halls since september this academic year, I've not been in Sheffield long but with the particular street we live on we've witnessed plenty of petty crime(in no particular order):

Fireworks being fired at us and our building (by a FAMILY of chavs no less, mother and father included)

Cars being broken into and radios nicked

Students being attacked by bricks being thrown

A gang of 12 chavs or so robbing booze from netto and storming out the locked tills (but then getting caught and beaten by shop managers and staff and then threatening to beat them up for stopping them from nicking stuff. The chavs wanted to know "what the fuck they were doing and what their problem was" - i thought stopping theft was pretty self-explanatory)

Now, this may not sound like much in comparison to what is on here, but the difference is, the police have been very good with it all. Two of the cars that were witnessed being broken into, the blokes were caught from the descriptions and were in court within 3 weeks of the theft, turned out they were repeat offenders and got sentenced. Each time there was a fight or assualt we always had at LEAST one police car round with a few officers within half hour of any incident, one time we had a riot van, another time we had 4 squad cars and a dog van - it all depended on the severity and numbers of people reported to be involved. Through various descriptions they were always able to figure out which locals it was and rather than say they had tried and couldn't do anyhting they suggested that they just needed a few more incidents and they could get the troublemakers in the area evicted and under orders not to come back in that area. True to their word, this is exactly what happened. Considering I've only been here about 7 months and this has already happened and that family has been evicted, I am quite pleased and impressed with the quality of the local cops.

But seriously, besides the few local families here that have now been removed, i've seen very little crime in sheffield and am impressed with the police presence and they always have those city ambassadors about to report stuff. We even have loads of police on bikes! They always pre-empt football matches too and fill the city centre with cops. Most days in Sheffield I will see some police at some point in the day, but have never witnessed crime in the city centre areas at all!

Can I ask what area of Sheffield this was?
It is so different from my experiences I can only suppose you had nothing to do with the Attercliffe police station area.

Don't know the name of the area
the postcode is S2 4TB/S1 4TA (they keep changing the postcode as its a new building and its taken them ages to decide)

It's just around 500yards away from Bramall lane football club and just off shoreham street. That kind of area.

I started reading your story and it seemed very similar to mine.

i have lived in a few cities - Liverpool Manchester and Sheffield being some of them... Sheffield was by far the worst - i used to live in Norfolk Park =- just up from where you live... near Truo works i think. Any way in my year in Sheffield i saw - and i kid you not.

(Ahem)
1. I was robbed outside the McDonalds near where you live on the roundabout, at 1pm lunchtime, with a knife, by 3 guys.
2. My house was robbed ~2pm (Neighbours was on TV) and me being on my own in the house... loss of 3 laptops 2 mobile phones and a wallet.
3. Cars being robbed - there was a jail hostel next door - the ex cons were frequently caught trying to hot wire cars in the student car park.
4. 4 Stabbings including one outside the McDonalds in city centre - which followed what i can only describe as an all out brawl with chairs being flung, windows smashing,
5. Police chases through our halls campus chasing a man with an Axe with police dogs and helicopter in chase. This happened on 3 separate occasions...
6. Numerous break-ins - usually the hall flats that backed onto the footy field (Norfolk Park itself)
7. Shootings - mainly in the Brammal lane area
8. Rape
9. Male Rape (at the top of Granville
10. Numerous beatings / assaults.

Now, most of the above I didn’t personally witness (about 60-70%) but they did happen very close to where i lived (within half a mile) all within 9 months.... I have Never, NEVER seen anything as bad as that.....

I think I know the area. Isn't there a chinese wholesale supermarket round there as well?

I used to live in Eccleshall road and saw plenty of crime. Probably my favourite spectacle was a knife fight at 1am in the tescos car park on eccleshall road. Jesus. I didn't even slow down driving.

Now I live in a slightly more salubrious area of Burncross in north Sheffield.

Norfolk Park!!!! Holy God I went there once and vowed never to go again.

ecclesall road was the posher end to town... towards the redbrick area... still, i saw my fair share of 'action' in that area too..

all in all - sheffield would not be on my list of must visit citys..

Wandered through there a few weeks into my first year, trying to find a shortcut. Didn't find a shortcut, but found a middle aged woman and an aging rasta being sick on the pavement.

Yes, there is indeed a chinese wholesale supermarket nearby, I assume you are referring to the one next-door to the newly built unite forge building. I must admit I have heard horrible things about Norfolk Park. Fortunately for us the security is quite good for our building in terms of locks and CCTV and high gates etc. Plus its just about adjacent to the city centre and there's not so much crime there.

Reading another one of the replies Tesco's on Eccy road is mentioned - I am living about 10 seconds walk from that location as from July this year. Hope its still not as bad!

When I first lived up here in Sheffield, I live in Gleadless Valley. Described yesterday as the worst part of Sheffield. It was described recently by my mate as being somewhere that if you yawn they'll nick your fillings. I'm up in Dore now. Much nicer.

Nope
Charlotte Court is a further 600yards or so down the road away from the city centre. I am in a new set of halls for this year called the Anvil.

I'm sure there are many much nicer parts of Sheffield, but I still quite like the city even from the impression and view I have had from here.

I grew up in Sheffield (Watethorpe)
And not had many problems, apart from the usual chav related bollocks as a teenager. I think the best I've seen is when Gatecrasher was burned down (thank God).

I now live in Barnsley.

Eccy road is a great place to live and you have the fine watering hole that is the nursery tavern.

I'm pretty close to being a Brummie - I have a birmingham postcode anyways! I'm orignally from the wonderful town of Burton-on-Trent, the brewing capital of the world. You get off the train in that place and the first thing you smell is beer, the whole town has always smelt permanently of beer for much longer than I have been on this planet. Either that or marmite on the occasional day, with that being made there too. Dependant on where in the town you are you can sometimes get a whiff of coffee from the Nescafe factory also... Heaven!
