This is a question Failed Projects

You start off with the best of intentions, but through raging incompetence, ineptitude or the plain fact that you're working in IT, things go terribly wrong and there's hell to pay. Tell us about the epic failures that have brought big ideas to their knees. Or just blame someone else.

I just can't bring myself to do it, it brings close to tears when i think about it but if I get a pro in it would mean the last scrap of my manhood would be dished away like so musch rotting cornbeef.

Just sellotape a big pole to your brush/roller. Job's a gooden :D

Thinking about painting your ceiling is a great deal worse than actually doing it.
I speak from experience.

I concur
it takes hardly any time at all

Not necessarily
When I painted my newly plastered bathroom ceiling I used some sealant on it first to make sure the paint went on smoothly. Unfortunately the sealant is very very runny so I ended up with it everywhere. And I mean, because it was summer and I was doing this shirtless, EVERYWHERE.

The stuff also sets very quickly. By the time I had finished, my armpit looked and felt like I had a brillo pad growing there. It would not wash off and I ended up having to shave my armpits.

However, once the sealed ceiling was dry the paint went on a treat. An already painted ceiling should be no trouble.

As a previous reply stated...
a roller on a pole is the way forward. Also use good quality paint (Crown, Delux etc), not Homebase own 10p a bucket rubbish (which is like painting with milk).

paint problem solved
smoke embassy no 1 in huge quantities, it will give your ceiling a rather pleasant yellowy look. You will also look super cool smoking. But a word to the wise, stop smoking before you get cancer.

Papering
My father had to paper a ceiling, and gave up on it as too difficult. So he got a decorator in who completed it in a day or so. The decorator had only 1 arm.

I've papered a ceiling. Did it in one day
but would get a professional in to do it next time.

Eurgh
just finished painting the downstairs loo (not a euphemism, I'm decorating and decided to start with the smallest possible room in the house).

I hate doing the fiddly edgy bits, no matter how hard I try they're never quite straight. So I painted the ceiling the same colour as the walls, thinking "why don't people just do it this way?". I now realise and have to paint the ceiling again in white. Probably with 2 or 3 coats. :(

Don't make me bully you into it

I've solved the problem of painting awkward areas such as the ceiling
along with the problem of ensuring masculinity is maintained throughout...

A couple of years ago I invested £300 into an industrial paint sprayer. Any paint job itself takes about 30 mins of prep, 5 mins of spraying, and 10 mins of cleanup. Any you carry a "gun" whilst doing the deed!

I now LOVE painting!

My mother and I decided to tackle painting the ceiling in my flat one saturday a few months ago. The problem is I have one of those godawful acoustic/popcorn ceilings that just soak up paint like a sponge and takes forever to paint. 7 hours later my ceiling looked like a dsylexic 3 year old decided to have a go and had a fit half way through. Half the ceiling has a lovely mottled cloudy effect and the other half is just random stripes of gray (old ceiling) and shiny white (new ceiling). We didn't even try to bother around the edges. Now I look up at my ceiling whenever I am being a couch potato and get a headache thinking about the day that I won't be able to stand it anymore and have to give it another coat :/
