trouble is archie, we're looking at it from the wrong perspective
i saw 'the shining' only recently, and it was a shite, plodding, obviously scripted movie, with mannered performances. However, I only think that because it was in it's time a startlingly original, shocking horror film that has since been plundered by tv and filmmakers for every last ounce of quality it held, and because of that has lost it's originailty and sheen.

Same with the beatles and the beach boys, as a vanguard they too have been ripped off, used for inspiration and 'imporved on' so of course they sound dull and lifeless these days
