If I was in charge of the B3ta fatwa department, we wouldn't be hearing too much from Simply Red in the future. Who's on your musical shit list and why?

Fuck it: The Beatles... most over rated band in the UK's history, this only appears to be a few peoples opinion, but it's my opinion too, so fits the qotw.

Why's every other schmuck on this board complaining about bands being 'over rated'. Is this some form of modern insanity.

you said they were over-rated.
So, just to tidy this up, the Beatles are worse (see topic) than all the other bands and artists that they influenced over the last few decades?
You realise this includes Teh Quo? (try 'don't pass me by' on the white album; it's bascially Quo's entire career in one song)

To me, it sounds like you think people who have the opinion that the Beatles are great are somehow wrong.

i appreciate what they have done in terms of inspiring other artists etc etc, but there's just something about their music i don't see the genius in. I think it was a bit of a right place/right time job.
I think it may also have something to do with being able to play all of their songs on the guitar after about 6 months of learning, they are mostly the same chords/progressions.
its just a bit boring to me is all.
Dont get me wrong though, i know simplicity is the key to success in music, and they are a talented band. just not my cup of tea.

OK, they were OK but did they really stand out from their contemporaries that much? My mum was a teenager at the time and she reports that it was not remotely cool to like The Beatles in the 60s, it just meant you were safe and boring, a bit like liking U2 now.

You'll see that in fact The Beatles were highly influential to British (and worldwide) music of the era, and continue to be.
Their musical style grew to be highly original and has been copied in one way or another ever since.
You probably underrate them because of how they compare to the weath of music around today, much of which is based on their work.
I suppose classical composers or Elvis/50's bands were all overrated too.
You're entitled to your opinion, otherwise I wouldn't be able to offer mine, I just wish people would back up their claims a little better with some thought, rather than just saying that a band is shit.
Care to offer what bands you think are better and see how they stand up to scrutiny?
