This is a question Worst Person for the Job

In a week where it emerges that the new Health Secretary is a fan of the hocus-pocus that is homeopathy, tell us about people who are spectacularly out of their depth in a job. Have you ever found yourself wallowing in your own incompetence? Tell us. (Note: "Name of football manager/politician - nuff said" does not constitute an answer)

Anyone remember the "Love Bug"?
This was a viral 'worm' (circa May 2000) spread by email containing an attachment named LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.txt.vbs.
Its attachment, posing as a text document, was actually a chunk of VB script (the double file extension was a bit of a 'give away') which, if opened, would be executed by MS Outlook. It would then proceed to rape your address book, sending copies of itself to the first 50 or so entries; then your computer, overwriting various files with copies of itself, making itself auto-run on startup and installing the Barok trojan.

I received my copy (which, for the record, I wasn't stupid enough to open - apart from with a 'dumb' text editor, so I could pull its wings and legs off) from our Computer Operations Manager - the guy in charge of our network, hardware, computer security, etc.

Oh how we laughed!

When I was an IT admin I sent out harsh warnings to our Helpdesk team about not opening suspicious looking attachments.
I then anonymously emailed them all a VB script which filled their screens with popups saying,"What did I tell you about opening dodgy attachments? - Airman Gabber"

About 5 minutes later the whole helpdesk office was full of the sound of popups spamming most of the teams PC's.

Funtimes.

Our old IT manager used to forward every single chain email
no matter how stupid, to the whole office, despite the company policy clearly stating that this should not be done.
Dead from the neck up.

"Yeh - forward onto 10 people for your wish to become true"
Women in my office(sorry) were always prey for this trick. They would always send me stuff thinking emails were linked to magic-wishes.

I was tempted to send them the Irish virus email:
"Please forward this on to everyone in your address book, then format your hard drive. Thank you!"

# rm -rf?
For the love of god if you're on anything unix based. Just don't!

I used to get loads of 'em...
and would think, "Hang on, you work in I.T., you're supposed to be all logical and rational, you KNOW I'm all logical and rational, yet you insist on sending me this shite???"
Guess it was because I was too polite to reply "Enough with the pixie-shit cunty"

My first day in my current job
was clearing up the mess created by two people simultaneously triggering that script, causing most of the office image library to get deleted.

What a fun day that was :(

I got a copy from the bloke sitting opposite me
"You didn't just click something you shouldn't have, did you?"

"Erm, maybe..."

Apparently Strong Bad has a Tandy computer.

The Tandy's processor didn't know what to make of the script, so it spat out a string of gibberish instead. The Chapman brothers had one and found the results to be funny enough to run with it.
