"You're doing it wrong"
Chthonic confesses: "Only last year did I discover why the lids of things in tubes have a recessed pointy bit built into them." Tell us about the facepalm moment when you realised you were doing something wrong.

When i was younger...
...much younger, i hasten to add, a friend of mine had the soundtrack to 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' on vinyl.
I didn't say anything, but wondered how i'd failed to see 'Close encounters of the first and second kind' at the cinema.

Ahem
I literally only found out there wasn't a Close Encounters of the 1st or 2nd kind about 3 weeks ago. I'm 31.

Same here
I have a similar problem with the Elvis Presley film BLUE HAWAII. I haven't watched it yet because I'm still waiting to see BLUE HAWA first.

Apparently
when they made the film of the play The Madness of George III, they changed the title to The Madness of King George so that people wouldn't say "I won't bother seeing that because I didn't see the first two".

What about ...
... that Wesley Snipes movie, Passenger 57? Who'd have thought that franchise was worth 50-odd movies?
And Malcolm 10 (though they used the Latin numbering to portray a bit of class).

I used to wonder why the aliens were the
Third Kind. I assumed it was some kind of humanoid/ape ranking system, I suppose. Apes the first, humans the second, and after evolution, the Third Kind. Aliens.
There are, according to Wikipedia, Nine Kinds. Each one getting closer and closer to alien contact, with the Ninth Kind being full on "Hey, Mr. Alien, it's a pleasure to meet y- *ZZAPP*"
