This is a question "You're doing it wrong"

Chthonic confesses: "Only last year did I discover why the lids of things in tubes have a recessed pointy bit built into them." Tell us about the facepalm moment when you realised you were doing something wrong.

Not really a facepalm moment
but in all my 40+ years on this planet I've never yet learned how to tie a tie properly.

I use a kind of half-arsed method which works, but it's not a proper double Windsor knot. I've tried to do it properly, following instructions, and I manage it OK at the time, but by the next time I come to try it I've forgotten entirely. I don't wear a tie often enough to get much practice, so it's unlikely I'll ever learn to do it.

no
just ask someone else to premake the tie for you, and when you remove it don't completely unloop, just hang on a hanger like that

Doesn't always work
This method depends on the size of the neck involved - if you have a big neck and you want the tip of the tie to be low enough, there's not enough in the loop to undo it enough to go over your head.

*has unfeasibly large neck*

My neck's normal sized (16")
but I do have an unusually large head. I went to look at hats once, and the shop owner had to rummage round the stockroom to find one that would fit me.

I got a bespoke suit for my wedding last year
my tailor very politely corrected my half arsed attempt and showed me a foolproof method. He was ace. I was embarrassed.

Ask Plod...
I'm like you. Haven't a clue how to get it right. Didn't wear ties at our school.

Last time I needed to tie a tie for a job interview, I had no one to do it for me... so stopped at the local Police Station and asked them to do it.

don't they use clip-ons these days
in case they get choked to death by a chav or something?

(Although, that doesn't mean you wouldn't find at least one plod who'd know how to tie one)

.
I'm sure if you just practiced every day for a few then muscle memory would kick in. I've not tied a tie since my school days but I'm pretty sure I could still do it as long as I didn't think about it.
