B3tans help please
We are off to That London for wedding next week and we have been told the car might not be available now so we are looking at coaches and trains. Trains would be preferable but the wedding is near Isleworth and the I want to know if you can help with the following.

1) Is there anyway I can get the two of us to London for less than £100 (from Leeds) as the trains are far more expensive than I thought.
2) Do I have to have a london railcard thingy when I get there do you save much money with one seeing as we'll probably only be getting a train to and from Kings Cross.

If you don't know what is the best condiment. I quite like blue dragon sweet chilli dip.

Megabus.
Oystercard is probably worthwhile if you're getting the tube or bus more than twice.
(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:22, archived)
whats a megabus?

(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:23, archived)
Cheap coach company.

The catch is that toilets are broken, or non-existent.
And the air conditioning packs up on hot days.

£40 for 2 people return seems wrong
surely it's got to be a bit shit, do you just turn up and get on it.
(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:29, archived)
yeah, you get a code and you just show the driver that code
on the mega bus its only a quid fifty to london from cardiff
(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:32, archived)
(if you book more than a month in advance)

(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:33, archived)
really?
im pretty sure when i went to the london bash i only booked it liek 2 weeks in advance and it was still only that much.
(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:35, archived)
It's ok.
Better than National Express.
(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:32, archived)
Yeah.
The coaches are actually pretty good. Tend to be quite new with decent air conditioning. Plus the seats aren't made of fake leather that sticks to you like on National Express.
(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:35, archived)
National express:
Make tickets that you pretty much print immediately or lose, or
Make you queue for ages to collect your ticket while you miss your coach
Overbook the coach and bring along another shit one for the overflow,
Direct the overflow bus to miss stops, including yours
Put a seat right next to the toilet, usually the only one left
Promise on-coach wi-fi that simply doesn't exist
...and worst of all instruct their drivers to perform the same comedy banter at every stop until you want to run up and thwack them around the head with the free water bottle they don't even give you any more.
(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:41, archived)
And just to add insult to injury, the average speed per journey is about 18mph.

(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:43, archived)
It's brilliant.
I used to get the megabus from Manc to London quite often. Cost me £4 return. Loved it.

A bus from the mesazoic era.

(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:25, archived)
it makes journeys half price but i think they nick a 3 pound deposit when you top it up now

(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:25, archived)
I agree with all of these.

(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:25, archived)
coaches are pretty cheap

(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:22, archived)
but it's an 8 and a half hour journey
which, even though the wedding isn't until late in the day would mean that we would both be exhausted and have no time to get ready. We could do it at a push and after pricing that up on the national express thats still £90 but with added stress.
(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:24, archived)
Manchester from London return is about £50 if you prebook the tickets.

(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:23, archived)
On the train that is.

(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:23, archived)
i live in london, i have no idea what you are on about
glad to help

You may get a small rental car for the weekend for £50.
Bit of petrol to pay for but no farting around with tubes or buses. Where are you coming from?
(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:25, archived)
Nevermind, Fluzzy gave me a clue up there.

For 1, I'd suggest going back in time a few weeks and booking earlier.
In the absence of a time machine, try splitting your journey into shorter segments and see if you can find cheaper single tickets available.

Try changing at Doncaster, there are far more London-bound trains down that line and thus a greater possibility of finding cheap seats.

Hire a car.

(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:26, archived)
I was going to suggest this too.

(, Fri 12 Jun 2009, 18:27, archived)
I was too.

Photoshop an incriminating picture of the groom and a dead animal and post it on his facebook.
Problem solved.
