Ex-RPS writer Quinns is having a go at a boardgame/cardgame video review stuff
so people are doing that kind of thing, people are interested in it

Yeah, I've seen a few peoples board games review blogs and videos, not to mention board game geek which is a big big site.
(

so there are already loads of board game review websites out there?
this is QUITE the business plan.

Yeah because my business plan is to have a website which is free for people to go on and have a look.
honestly I hope to make fucking shit loads of money for this idea.

Given that you want to create a review site, I still think that wordpress is the way to go.
You can attach any kind of data to any kind of content, such as "Manufacturer", "Score", "rules"...etc. And then filter/sort/display it on those basis.

I just wanted something that looked a little more... well like a website really.
Otherwise I might as well just post reviews on here.
(
MONO!, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 15:45,

You can make it look however you want, it's up to you how it displays.

There is pretty much nothing (with a few minor exceptions) that you can't recreate IGN, or Gamespot, or whatever.
(

But the problem is that the 'simple' way of doing things is too simple.
am I really going to have to learn a whole language in order to do anything?
(
MONO!, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 16:02,

I pick things up pretty quickly but I just remember playing around with simple website designer stuff years ago and you could do loads with them.
but wordpress seems too restrictive if you have no programming knowledge.
(
MONO!, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 16:04,

What do you mean by 'too simple' ? What objective are you trying to do that it can't?
And yes, you're going to have to learn sevrel languages to make a website.
It's a bit like someone asking to build their own car, a high end car, without knowing how to drive, weald or paint...

I'd say it's more like someone wanting to build their own car
with a retarded mechanic there to help.
(
MONO!, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 16:12,

It's still impossible.

Um, no it's not.
I currently have a website.
and it works and everything
Just doesn't look quite right.
(
MONO!, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 16:22,

Oh, well, if it's all done, minus it's appernace, then that's fine, it's all done, just hire a designer and there you go.
Can I see it?
(
G/PP 💩💩💩💩💩€, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 16:24,

No.
I want to make it look how I want it first.
but blogs are shit.

OK, what database system are you using, and how are you connecting to it?
What technologys are you using?
(

MySQL
I'm only really doing anything through dreamhost and one click installs and the page edited stuff included with them.

Cool, make sure when you turn it into a comercial venture that the data is easerly portable or it'll cost you a fortune in the long run.
I still think Wordpress is the best option for you, they're fantastic bases for review sites.

thank you very very much for that, best themes I've seen for what I want.
I think I must've done about 20-30 google searches and found 50-60 websites listing themes but nothing even close to what I wanted.
(

No probs =)
The advantage of Wordpress is that there are so many people who work on it, like, bigger than any other code project (and deffo website code project) I can think of... that people have adapted it to do more or less anything. Pretty much anything you can think of is already done on it, if you want people to use facebook to leave comments, twitter to get updated when you post....etc. pretty much _anything_ that's possible, is already done for little or no money.

cool, yeah there are definately big advantages to using "blog" type websites I know that.
just dislike the look.
I'm going to have a serious play around when I get home, quickly type up some "placeholder" text and images etc and see how I get on.

Even with the best machanic in the world, who's willing to do it all for free, he still needs the origional person to be able to be able to say the details of what they want.

I just don't understand the point of using something else if I'm going to be (pretty much) writing it all myself anyway.
I can't exactly learn from picking bits out here and there and not knowing what I'm doing, I'll have to learn by starting from scratch.
(
MONO!, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 16:46,

All I have as yet worked out is that word press will let me choose a 'theme' pre-determined by someone else
and you can then change text and move things on the page.
and without learning a little bit of code, that's it
(
MONO!, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 16:13,

*sigh*
You can make wordpress look and run however you want, but you're going to have to learn code to do it, quite a few bits of code... or get/pay someone you know to do so.
(

You either accept the software as it comes or you customise it to your needs.
You either learn how to do the latter or you pay someone to do it for you.
