Cloverfield seems to be an exercise in making a series of films where none of them has anything to do with the other ones.
First one: shakycam found footage Godzilla copycat.

Second one: psychological thriller with an is he/isn't he crazy? baddie.

Third one: uninspired rip-off of Event Horizon, which itself was pretty naff.

Yeah, Event Horizon wasn't very good, was it? I can never understand the following it has

It was pretty pants, alright.
The Transformers films have a huge following too and they're aggressively terrible, so I guess there's no accounting for taste.

I dunno, if you're a 14 year old future rapist with ADHD and a love of shiny things I can perhaps see the appeal

That's Michael Bay's target audience in a nutshell.

I hate that bastard. With his best fake smile.

I found my eldest watching one of the later films on Netflix (whichever one it is where Galvatron is a swarm of metal bees).
When questioned, he replied that it was so bad that he couldn't stop looking at it.

not the bees!

There's not much to recommend that film but, like Ghost Rider 2,
Nic Cage chewing on the set almost makes it worthwhile.

Nic Cage chews the ever-living shite out of the set in everything he does.

I tried watching that rapture film he was in.
He looked uncommonly bored.

ghost rider 2 is a decent enough watch

It's terrible.
Ciarán Hinds getting his soul removed before filming was an admirable commitment to the role, but more than the film deserved.

that big flaming bagger 288 though

That looks like something I would type.

I liked Event Horizon.
Was a better Doom film than the actual Doom film, and works as a sort of prequel to the Warhammer 40k universe, too. Shame all the cut footage of hell got destroyed, though.

Sunshine was far superior and often overlooked.

yeah, that's not a bad one
i've heard that 'life' is similar and better too

Also good... The alien is clever.

the fourth one is already made, releasing later this year and is set in world war 2
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
