In the C19th, they began to realise that by obsessively aping western European culture for hundreds of years they had all but lost their own, and made up a load of stuff as 'traditional Russian' so they could have 'indigenous folk art' for nationalist pride. Basically a kind of 'fake news' Arts & Crafts movement.

One of those, fuck knows, it's been 20 years since I studied it and I've had no need for that knowledge since. One of them, anyway, was basically just appropriating the art styles of other previous movements. Approaching architecture like pick and mix sweets, just combining any old shit together, no matter how awful. Then posting the result on /board.
