Russian dolls are actually Japanese in origin, and are just another example of Russian cultural theft like their famous 'onion domes' which are Islamic in origin
In the C19th, they began to realise that by obsessively aping western European culture for hundreds of years they had all but lost their own, and made up a load of stuff as 'traditional Russian' so they could have 'indigenous folk art' for nationalist pride. Basically a kind of 'fake news' Arts & Crafts movement.

Which, I think we can surely all agree, is interesting, Queef.

Art Nouveau, or Deco, or Postmodernism.
One of those, fuck knows, it's been 20 years since I studied it and I've had no need for that knowledge since. One of them, anyway, was basically just appropriating the art styles of other previous movements. Approaching architecture like pick and mix sweets, just combining any old shit together, no matter how awful. Then posting the result on /board.

Sir Walter Scott did similar things in Scotland
A load of things we think are 'traditional Scottish' were made up in the 1820s and later
