Excellent work! Very nice.
Vaguely reminds me of a short I saw about 25 years ago at an animation festival. I think it was all pencil drawn, had an unfinished quality about it. It was about a baby and a stuffed giraffe, and the giraffe was trying to attach the baby. It was probably crap but it stuck in my mind and haven't been able to find any information on it. Anyone help me out here?

Yes I understood the concept and the dreaming stuff but I just didn't find it entertaining. When I told people this I was told "well, you just don't get it because its sophisticated and telling a complicated story". I didn't think so at all so maybe I missed that aspect.
( , Thu 23 Oct 2014, 15:13, Share, Reply)
I thought Inception was a masterwork of storytelling and editing
My only criticism was that the dream sequences weren't nearly at odds with reality enough to be in line with what I've experienced as 'dreams'
But then that would have probably narrowed its accessibility significantly. It's probably one of the finest examples of a high concept summer blockbuster I've seen, in the way it deals with such a complex subject without throwing people off.

Excerpts from the reviews (via Wikipedia)
Pauline Kael said it was "a monumentally unimaginative movie,"[143] and Stanley Kauffmann of The New Republic called it "a film that is so dull, it even dulls our interest in the technical ingenuity for the sake of which Kubrick has allowed it to become dull."[144] Renata Adler of The New York Times wrote that it was "somewhere between hypnotic and immensely boring."[145] Variety's 'Robe' believed the film was a "Big, beautiful, but plodding sci-fi epic ... A major achievement in cinematography and special effects, 2001 lacks dramatic appeal to a large degree and only conveys suspense after the halfway mark."[146] Andrew Sarris called it "one of the grimmest films I have ever seen in my life ...2001 is a disaster because it is much too abstract to make its abstract points."[147] (Sarris reversed his opinion upon a second viewing of the film, and declared "2001 is indeed a major work by a major artist."[148]) John Simon felt it was "a regrettable failure, although not a total one. This film is fascinating when it concentrates on apes or machines ... and dreadful when it deals with the in-betweens: humans ...2001, for all its lively visual and mechanical spectacle, is a kind of space-Spartacus and, more pretentious still, a shaggy God story."[149] Eminent historian Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. deemed the film "morally pretentious, intellectually obscure and inordinately long ... a film out of control".[150] It has been noted that its slow pacing often alienates modern audiences more than it did upon its initial release.[151]

There is a modern fad for 'Director's cuts,' of films, generally when there is a fan base fanatical enough to spend more money on any such rubbish released prolonging their interest in something. Also, ANYTHING Kevin Costner has directed and/or starred in; I have absolutely no interest in seeing them.
There is a very good reason why other people should edit any cinematic work you do, because it is almost natural to get a bit lost up your own bum hole. That long forty second panoramic shot of the ocean, Kevin, does the audience really need to see that? Just saying because your film is already three and a half hours long. Kubrick's films by and large seem much the same sort of thing. Someone who really wasn't challenged enough to edit a bit more and be less extravagant (with time).
Though that is not to say I don't admire much of what he has done immensely. His use of lenses in Barry Lyndon was a visual feast.

The only long shot / bit that annoys me in "2001" is the jump sequence at the end because the section after the walls of lights is just a bad showreel of what are now old school effects
but the pacing of the rest of the film doesn't bother me at all
I'm usually not interested in extended versions / director's cuts, but some not-extended versions of films get cut so much that they don't make any sense (like Kingdom of Heaven)

Not that this will ever get read
but I was travelling in New Zealand when I decided that the quad bike I was driving would look much better upside down in a ditch with me underneath it, resulting in a broken wrist.
Moving onto Australia, I spent weeks getting a fantastic tan but soon came the time where the cast had to be removed, revealing a a pale, shriveled forearm. I then attended a "Neighbours" night at a pub in Melbourne where Toadie took one look at my arm and laughed at it because it looked so ridiculous.
Great story I'm sure you'll agree :D

It's good enough of a claim
for me to brag that I read a post by the nephew of the man who played timpani for the Vienna Philharmonic under Karajan. (No one will know what I talk about.)

Three point landing
As it seems to be sort of superhero day on /links have a montage of three point landings in films and stuff. I didn't even know it had a name.
(GC-o-matic says 2012. Sorry to anyone offended by the repost.)

talking of black holes
here's the utterly bonkers ending to the 1979 Black Hole.
disney film, though quite what they were thinking with this scene is anyone's guess. Properly disturbing mental.

Disney had no idea how to end Black Hole as they didn't know what would happen inside a black hole
They therefore asked the opinion of 143 theoretical physicists, from 26 different countries, and what appeared in the film was their unanimous answer

Didn't they go in the black hole and fly out an 'other side?'
which would have meant our universe would have aged and died before they even reached the singularity, so yeah, all sorts of far out stuff

loved this film as a kid
mostly because of that badass robot and the weird ending. It is a pretty mixed up film though, on the one hand you have evil robot killing people with spinning blades and on the other you have a goofy cartoon robot making corny jokes. Makes me wonder if there are any interesting stories behind the making of it.

I believe at its time it was only film with Walt Disney Productions in the credits to feature a character's on-screen death
And swearing. It prompted them to create Touchstone for release of more adult content. Whether that's still true since Disney's mega acquisitions recently, I don't know.
I think it's a film which has a fascinatingly misjudged tone, like a lot of '80s fair essentially marketed at kids/families. I quite like that myself. I was also a big fan of Optimus Prime dying.

the best kids stuff finds a way to sew in some more challenging adult themes
without just having a battle where someones head is chopped off, or a scary gross monster like they do these days.

I think the Lego Movie got that light/dark balance just right. There were some genuinely challenging parts for kids in it, I think.
As did Toy Story 3. I can't think of many other kids films that have managed it so successfully in recent years.

Quite a few things getting killed I remember.
Now if its psychological trauma you want then get your kids to watch When the wind blows.

I remember my mum wouldn't let me finish watching that one when I was a kid and it came from the telly
as the rabbits started to rip each other apart all proper like.
It's a really good film. And this reminds me I need to get round to watching "Plague Dogs" one of these days.

That was a bit Jackel and Hyde. It did actually chainsaw someone at one point
You get the impression (looking back at it) they almost had to throw in an ambiguous, almost 'Godhead' ending to be as vague, and visual, as possible. The reality of falling into a black hole would be far more abrupt

indeed
If you jumped of a 1M high block you would be travelling at a million miles per hour by the time you reached the bottom.
which you wouldnt because you would be torn to shreds by the gravity.

Diplomacy is more effective once you're secure. The US just bombed the hell out of lots of civilian oil refiniries in Syria and yet you see no photos of dead civilians.
