# only if you go back 20 years into the past
or move to australia. seriously, i had to use a tin opener to get at them too. I didn't even think we had one

# Australia's passion for beetroot confounds me.

# I love it
but can never be bothered getting it out of the jar. I'm always worried I will get it on my clothes

# tell me about it! beetroot on burgers is wrong!
i only rediscovered them because they're so in your face here, i hadn't eaten a beetroot in over 20 years.
what gets me more though are the pizzas. what sane person puts POTATOES on a pizza?
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 13:10, archived)
# what?
are they cooked first? That's mad
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 13:11, archived)
# i dunno!
i don't know anyone that'd ever order one.
i'm sure there are others too which are pretty suspect as a pizza topping

# hahah
I remember once sitting in the pizza shop waiting for my pizza and there was a guy talking to the owner - obviously a mate - "yeah, yeah - OK give us one of those pizzas - you know with seafood and shit.." - that must be the worst kind of pizza ever!
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 13:13, archived)
# ha ha yeah
seafood pizza's bad enough, but seafood and shit! must be one of thos e boutique restaurants
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 13:14, archived)
# seafood pizza is great!
mussels, squid, prawns, anchovies! nomnomnom

hold the shit though

# it's a texture issue for me
squid, prawns, mussles all good, but not on a pizza. not for me.
red meat, sausage and on a very rare occasion, chicken. other than that, it's just wrong
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 13:30, archived)
# I know.
Ah well, looks like we're leaving now anyway, so no more beetroot worries for me.
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 13:14, archived)
# you're in sydney right?
how long you been here, why you leaving, etc?
let the grilling commence

# Here for a postdoc position.
I had been applying for funding, but the department didn't want to make up the small shortfall in funding, so they won't even back my application. They also took so long to decide that there's not eim left to apply elsewhere. Contract ends in four months and there's the square root of fuck-all going at the moment unless I want to take a 50% paycut and move back to Britain where there is a similar level of fuck-all going.
I am happy and cheerful.

# The end of my job means I have 28 days to find a new one or f***-off back to Blighty.
The worst bit is pulling Mk. 1 infant out of school.

# ah shit!
not a great time to move back either. what's the postdoc on?
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 13:23, archived)
# Metal-organic frameworks and molecular magnetism.
There is a post going in Edinburgh, but it's more of the same and I'd hoped to go for a lectureship. Something with a contract longer than one year.
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 13:25, archived)
# completely beyond my comprehension then!
I'm not too au faix with Postdocs. My wife talked about doing one a few years ago, but she got a lecturing job and that was pretty much the end of it. So, does this mean you're working in the private sector at the moment and trying to get funding through work, or are you at a uni?
Edinburgh's a good uni though right?
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 13:37, archived)
# Uni.
It's at Heriot-Watt, which is still a good uni. It's just that I've been a post doc for four years and wanted to get on a bit with this research lark.
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 13:41, archived)
# i'm confused now
i thought a postdoc was research
(, Wed 20 Apr 2011, 13:55, archived)
# It is, but it's research for someone else.
I have delusions of grandeur/adequacy
