I'd always assumed
that "numpy"/ "numpty" had a kind of affectionate sense to it. But the context here speaks against that. Have I been accidentally calling people something terrible?

In the sense that I understand it
"numpty" is a rather contemptuous description of someone who is pretty useless
or at least that's how it was bandied around when I worked IT support

It definitely has 'a kind of affectionate sense to it'
when compared with 'useless cunt'.

oh definitely
but compared with "productive and valued member of the team" it's not complimentary

it's usually a good humoured term for someone who constantly does something daft or stupid.
itob is a numpty from Cyprus who out of 38 posts I'd probably say 30 of them where wee childish comments made to me.
he is the epitome of a numpty troll.

Prodigy69 is a angry man from scotland who out of 59041 posts i'd probably say 59041 of them were boring derivative shit.
anyone could say the same about pretty much any of us. for example, i'm a useless prick, 99% of whose posts were boring derivative shit and the other 1% were flukes which immediately lead to a welter of boring derivative shit because i utterly lack imagination.
