I was born... what, about 9-10 years before DVDs came out?
Sure I have my fair share of VHSs but now it's impossible to go back.

i only really buy my favouritest favouritestest films again on BR, and mostly animated ones for the visual niceness that HD brings
For instance, commando on blu ray gives you glorious Bennett-vest in 1080p

I don't have a Blu-Ray player, not even a PS3.
But I get your logic, 1080p Akira must be amazing.

its quite grainy actually, compared to some 2D ghibli, disney and production IG films i have
but it does indeed look lovely - especially the backgrounds and tetsuo when he goes all blobby. Nice and colourful too, given the trashed surroundings.

Then again, the graininess can only be expected with a 25 year old anime movie.
But yeah, despite that there's tons of scenes with intricate details, such as, like you say, the ending sequence.

The only I've bought on Bluray that I've got on DVD
is The Thing
The Bluray player does a cracking job of upscaling so not a lot of point in double dipping my vast collection
