Every time the subject of sustainable energy generation comes up, a huge quantity of hot air is instantly generated for virtually no cost

Ha ha :D I've witnessed a full scale windfarm "brew up" in my village
A Wind farm was proposed on the fen by our village, a nearby resident decide this would not do and so started a campaign. Now this campaign was based soley on one ticket. That wind farms = noise/vibrations and that noise/vibrations would cause:
Structural damage
Deafness
Depression
Sleep deprived madness
Tooth loss
The mass exodus of EVERY single wild creature in a 5 mile radius.
And very quickly things got nasty, petitions were circulated, posters posted, banners erected, people came out in favour, people came out against. Local life all got a bit heated. Until finally the application was granted and the Farm went up. (very interesting to watch is was as well, any civil engineering fetishists would get a lot from seeing them raise the blades to the top)
And lo the fateful day came, when they would be “started”
Earplugs were bought, children driven to relations in the city for safety, ornaments sellotaped to shelves, Doom was surely upon us........
what they started them YESTERDAY??? They’ve been going all night? They are going right NOW???? but we can’t hear them....oh

It's astonishing how many people campaign against wind farms near them
and even more astonishing how few of them request a nuclear plant instead.
It's almost as if people want the convenience of electricity on demand but think it's reasonable to insist that someone else has to put up with any noise or mess from it.

Once in the pub someone raised the point that they would ruin the majestic flatness of the fens
An old boy who has lived on the fen edge for years sat right at the back looked into his pint for a minute and then spoke up,
"Bollocks, there's bugger all else to look at out there, it'll make a nice change"

Every time I read that
I keep imagining Thora Hird for some reason?

It was named after her
She got naming rights for discovering it in 1828.

Hahaha ornaments sellotaped to shelves
Seriously though, it takes just one stupid, ignorant person to kick off campaigns like this.
Going back a while to the late 90s when everyone in our area was getting FREE interwebs from a cable underground (hell, I'm not very techy and can't remember the details) except our street.
It turns out that the NIMBY next door objected to the road being dug up to lay said cable, garnered some support from other residents and the application was denied.
A year later he complained to me that he had to pay for his internet connection and tie up his phone line while others in the town got it free and it didn't interfere with their phone lines.
I told him to go to the council offices and see who objected to the cable being laid and to go round their house and shout at them.
Some people just don't like any sort of change.

*face palms*
Some of the "literature" handed out by the against-team was quite alarmingly luddite
One flyer comprised of a photo of a windturbine on fire (god knows how rare that is)
With the words DO YOU WANT THIS??!! underneath
