and just do interviews. They're always enjoyable and he speaks a lot of sense. Just don't find his self congratulatory sitcoms funny.

I love 'an idiot abroad' though, and even though its his mate in it, and he features frequently, i always think pilkington is far more likable and funny than gervais (and merchant, for that matter)

I love travel documentaries, and an idiot abroad is a breath of fresh air after seeing all those charley boorman things where he goes to visit a bloke in the middle of nowhere who makes rock shapes with excrement, only for him to exclaim 'wow, thats FANTASTIC!' once again.
More pessimism, miserableness and lack of entheusiasm in travel shows please :-D

Also did you hear the story of how he refused to kill an octopus when he was a waiter?
A man walks into a restaurant and orders squid. "Certainly sir," says Gervais, the waiter. "Would you like to choose your squid from the tank over there?" "I'll have that little green one with the moustache," says the customer. "Oh no!" replies Gervais. "But he's my favourite! He's so small and cute and friendly. Surely you'd prefer one of the bigger, meatier ones?" "No," says the customer. "It's got to be that one". So Gervais gets the little green squid out and puts him on the chopping block, raises his knife and ... the little squid looks up and smiles, twitching his bushy moustache into a big friendly grin! "It's no good' says Gervais. "I can't do it. I'll have to ask Hans who does the washing up. He's a big, tough brute - he'll be able to do the evil deed!' So out comes Hans, while Gervais disappears off in tears. Hans picks up the knife, raises it to chop the little squid's head off and ... once again the little friendly squid looks up and smiles, wiggling his little legs and twitching his little moustache. So Hans, too, finds it impossible to kill him.
The moral? Hans that does dishes is as soft as Gervais with mild green hairy-lip squid.
I'm sorry. So sorry.

the 'is he or isn't he for real' thing does my head in.
I can only see it as another of Gervais' over-stretched and annoying comedy characters. Well done to them for maintaining the deception though.
Either that or XFM have the lowest standards in Production

but when i see cartoon versions of him popping up over gervais' comedy vehicles, i do worry that there is a slight chance it could all be an elaborate role he's playing. I dbout it though - he seems believable and genuine.

Even seeing some 'backstage' / deleted scene type things on the DVD, including the shopping channel live bidding thing he did for those trousers he invented, he just seems that way. He doesnt have that borat / ali-g forced persona about him

for a producers job, that he kept for 6 years
He has to be a very good comedy actor with a well covered past.

I'm with you on this one.

I suspect he's more self aware than he lets on, so I just see him as someone with a good deadpan delivery (and better jokes than Ricky Gervais).
My problem with Idiot Abroad is that any documentary which clearly stages events for the sake of a plot just leaves me believing that none of it is real.
