but what makes a good reference file? Is it just saving pictures of various poses/models/etc.?

to get the images he wanted for that. Right down to making a cardboard Galactus helmet.

It is a bit of a pain in the arse if there's a photo set of a model you want to get more info on, but you don't get any results on Google Images at all.
