A life sentence usually means that you'll get released on licence after a much shorter period.
However, you are only on licence, and so can be recalled if you show signs of further naughtiness. You always have the threat of recall hanging over you.

In this case the charge is perverting the course of justice
Basically they were trying to hide incriminating evidence.
Hopefully they'll be charged for the actual hacking itself soon.
