following catastrophic opinion polls Cameron felt the only way to get the public back on side was to have a child abducted so he could appear on tv crying a lot in the hope that everyone would forget how him and his mates have utterly fucked the country over

every administration's tenure can be looked at retrospectively as "fucking the country over" to some degree
but people weren't really complaining when they were able to buy their house at a rate of 4/5% which was unheard of a decade earlier...
and, the conservatives' PLAN A was to cut back... which they admit didn't work, so they went for PLAN B to boost the economy by spending money on construction etc... which incidentally was Labour's PLAN A.
