There was something on telly that approached this subject.
And despite the manufacturer's denial, the truth was that the current Wagonwheel is smaller. It turned out that the extended rim of chocolate we were used to as kids ceased to be when they changed the mould in the mid 80's.

Similarly, perhaps French women in the 1970s
had a rim of chocolate which made them seem larger. I'm probably thinking of something else again...
