The blanket coverage of a murder case in a country with one of the highest murder rates in the world is utterly ridiculous. And why? Because he's someone that was briefly in the news ten months ago and because his girlfriend was "a bit of a looker". Without wanting to sound insensitive, it's a damning fucking indictment of the press right there.

Hearing a South African say 'prosthesis' and 'parabellum' in the space of a minute was great.

It seems really over-the-top to me. Maybe it's more a marker of how underfunded news stations, and the BBC in particular, are these days rather than a marker of how trivialised things are now, but I still think the blanket coverage is ridiculous.

Given that the murder of a South African model by someone very few people care about isn't really very important in our lives, but the collapse of Europe's fourth-biggest economy *is* I'd expect some more coverage of that than another facile BBC "Berlusconi: Why do people vote for him after the scandals! We don't know but we've gathered a load of quotes we won't bother putting into context!" article.
