NM, it's John Hurt apparently.
You know, the faster they cycle through new doctors the more this looks just like a random collection of actors who are in no way interesting when viewed as a group. Doctor Who has been all up the shit since 2005. They should go back to the pretensions of being educational that the series had in episodes such as The Romans. This would introduce some artistic constraint, and would stop the pretensions of being entertaining that cause it to be all up itself. The worst thing that happened to Doctor Who was when the BBC realised people liked it.

Capaldi's a disappointment, they should have gone for a 12 year old boy for the next one, just keep the whole BBC ageism thing alive

He will be nasty.
McCoy observed that the first doctor would sometimes scold his assistants and the second was kind of capricious, and made a conscious attempt to bring both of those traits back to the character. (So did Colin Baker, although all that came across was a permanent air of panic.) Eccleston seems to have extended that idea into "Doctor Who is a grumpy old sod". With Capaldi, I expect an exploration of "what if Doctor Who turned out to actually be Alastair Campbell?"

Can't imagine they'd have had the John Hurt
story if they were planning on making him nastier, as that kind of dealt with the idea of a bad(ish) Doctor.
