however, how did the shadow ray tracing result in a solid area at the first link? Even at the low angle of the hot light there should have been a bit of open loop (or, since it is actually an illustration you could make it happen by adjusting it to be less confusing?)

A nit, to be sure - I haven't done one of these kind of renderings in quite a while, and I am sure the software has improved a lot since then...
