Oddly, on waking, the idea didn't seem to lose a great deal of merit.
Still should probably avoid strong cheese before retiring.

I think the strategy is that he chucks in the towel and abdicates toot sweet and then it would go to William who's an All Round Good Egg - flies those rescue helicopter things dontchaknow.
Anyhow even if he sticks with it I'd take Chuck at the helm over Boris any day.

I think I prefer elections. Monarchy sort of made sense when it was about the guy who could best protect your tribe. Once it became hereditary representative of space wizard, not so much.

People forget what a reprehensible tory arse he actually is. It's dangerous to think because someone looks a certain way, they're harmless.
I always think President Assad looks like he's probably quite a nice guy, then I remember he's the president of Syria and also he's a dentist.

I still like him somewhat now. If you agree with somebody's politics, that can change your take from "complete fucking fool" to "disarmingly silly", and from "tricksy deceitful facade" to "complex personality with unexpected deep ideas".
I looked at the comments on the BBC article about his return to parliament, and something like 15 of the 20 top rated comments said things like you and Smallbrainfield: "Yes he’s a character, but there is a sinister sub plot to Boris. His affability is an obvious act", all that sort of stuff. The idea seems to be that he's tricking people into forgetting he has right wing politics by clowning around. I don't think that's actually deliberate at all, I think he's just a clownish individual with right wing politics, and is genuinely a bit nice. It's completely true that you should be aware of his politics when casting a vote, and not concentrating on his hair or what he did on a tightrope or anything like that. But I don't think he's sinister or devious. To some extent, OK, he acts foolish as a kind of social crutch to make public speaking easier, but lots of people do that, and if you like the person, it appears charming.

It was quite easy to believe that "Call me Dave" Cameron was nice, when he was only leader of the opposition. Self-serving, deceitful bastards are not nice.

Another broken Tory promise.
