"Symantec Security Response encourages all users and administrators to adhere to the following basic security "best practices":

* Turn off and remove unneeded services. By default, many operating systems install auxiliary services that are not critical, such as an FTP server, telnet, and a Web server. These services are avenues of attack. If they are removed, blended threats have less avenues of attack and you have fewer services to maintain through patch updates.
* If a blended threat exploits one or more network services, disable, or block access to, those services until a patch is applied.
* Always keep your patch levels up-to-date, especially on computers that host public services and are accessible through the firewall, such as HTTP, FTP, mail, and DNS services.
* Enforce a password policy. Complex passwords make it difficult to crack password files on compromised computers. This helps to prevent or limit damage when a computer is compromised.
* Configure your email server to block or remove email that contains file attachments that are commonly used to spread viruses, such as .vbs, .bat, .exe, .pif and .scr files.
* Isolate infected computers quickly to prevent further compromising your organization. Perform a forensic analysis and restore the computers using trusted media.
* Train employees not to open attachments unless they are expecting them. Also, do not execute software that is downloaded from the Internet unless it has been scanned for viruses. Simply visiting a compromised Web site can cause infection if certain browser vulnerabilities are not patched.

OR JUST STOP USING KAZAA FOR FUCKS SAKE
(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:12, archived)
# I've just started using Kazaa for the 1st time.
And boy, is it slow, even on a fast PC with broadband. Only another 73 hours till my stuff finishes downloading.
(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:15, archived)
# search more a few times
only get files with a load of users, and if you were smart and got kazaa lite, run speedup, if you got normal kazaa, uninstall it
(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:16, archived)
# if you got normal kazaa,
uninstall it. then run adaware, and uninstall the spyware.
(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:18, archived)
# yeah
i couldn't be arsed to go into that, only got 3 hours sleep last night
(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:19, archived)
# If you have
Kazaa Lite AND Speed Up... Get the Kazaa Lite Cheater as well... It fakes large uploads from your machine so that you get moved to the front of the queue on your downloads...
(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:19, archived)
# kazaa lite
comes with speedup and a few other tools these days, and auto sets your level to 1000, so no need to fuck about with the cheater
(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:21, archived)
# i hactually find that this version is best
doa2.host.sk/

'kazaa lite improved'. got a few extra features on it.

(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:22, archived)
# or even share loads of stuff
so you get huge uploads, and are transfered fairly to the front of the queue.
(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:56, archived)
# i find it works better if you:
1: wait till a search has finished and download the file with the most users
2: when it is downloading, right click on the file and 'find more users to download from'
3: get a copy of kazaa lite rather than real kazaa as it means you get rid of a lot of ad/spyware.

or
4: uninstall the sodding thing. buy your bloody music
(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:21, archived)
# I mostly do buy my own music.
But Kazaa (like the fondly missed Napster) seems to be pretty good for those old half remembered tracks from the past that I missed buying 1st time 'round on account of being skint/too young/couldn't be arsed. And most of them aren't available to buy any more. Currently downloading 7teen by The Regents.

# And a load of porn?
that's what it's best for.
(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:42, archived)
# Choose the file
that has the highest bandwidth ie over 400, remember you can only download at the speed they can upload..
(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:39, archived)
# Sorry, I don't see / get it
That could be because my brain's not awake yet though and this monitor at work is crap.

Anyone in London next thursday fancy joining me on a flash mob of Blair when he turns up for the Hutton enquiry?

Anyone see "Masters and Servants" last night and want to join me in kicking in that bloody Scouse family?

Right, that's probably me done for the day as I can only really lurk at work.

Mornin' btw

# i reversed the sky / water
sorry, thought it was obvious
(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:16, archived)
# Ah, subtle
yet obvious at the same time, if you know the original album cover, which I didn't, hence my difficulty in getting it. Ta for putting me right (:
(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:19, archived)
# had to google for the original to spot that!
(, Fri 22 Aug 2003, 9:15, archived)
# I've been doing that a lot this week!
