What? Why?
Car customising - a hobby for acne-riddled, mullet haired virgins who still wear backwards baseball caps & think that sticking bits of plastic & fibreglass to mummy's Nova makes them "street".

to have a road to yourself where you could get top speed out of your car with no fear of death/arrest?

They're called racetracks.
And are only for real cars, not a supermini with a large exhaust glued onto the back.
I'm just cocky cos I've bought a merc

Or go go-karting.
Which is great fun for a day out, and feels pretty fast because you're so low on the ground.

It am the most fun!
Last time I went I spat the dummy though. We did the day-long tournament thing, and I was 6th on the grid in the final. I was up to third and about to overtake when the clutch went in my kart. I threw my helmet doan and stormed off like a right stroppy get. Not my finest hour.

blimey - you sound like Mr P.
He says hes not competitve but if he's been on a work go carting trip he will give you minute details about everything - go on about getting fastest laps, moan about other 'idiots - IDIOTS' in the team etc etc. Makes me laugh actually

we could test that.
I could get in the driving seat of a car, with the keys, you could stand about 50 meters away and I'll see if i can make it that far, and what speed I'm doing when i get there. Mind you, if i can't find the brake then don't blame me, i have got long hair.

Only if you use my car
State its in, it probably wouldn't make 50 meters...

Can't you pay
to go on private racetracks? I thought you could.

Indeed you can
£160 for a day at Silverstone, similar for Brands Hatch. Smaller, less famous tracks (and there are a few) also do open-track days, generally for about £70/80.
I needed 4 new tyres after a day at Castle Coomb though..

Not really...
I have an aversion to poorly-maintained, shoddily-made lumps of steel & aluminium being driven by morons at very high speeds*
