# Let's just test my bandwidth
I think you'll like it

Clicky Clicky

Let me know
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:06, archived)
# is there supposed to be something there?
something that works, i mean.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:13, archived)
# it should work
it does take a few minutes to load up completely

at least it does on my dialup
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:17, archived)
# i'm on a cable hookup,
so it should load superfast, if anything's going to load at all.

which it isn't, seemingly.

maybe it doesn't work on safari?
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:19, archived)
# the first time I loaded it from my site, it kinda bogged, and I had to refresh
could you try that?

I'll delete the thread if it still doesn't work

(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:22, archived)
# hm.
i can see your main site fine, but not this gallery. it's just got a great big white space. it's not even prompting me about plug-ins or anything.

there is a chance that it's just not compatible with safari.

edit: however, huzzah for cat-loving amerib3tans!
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:25, archived)
# Thanks
my main site is just a reg people type site

the good stuff is hidden inside

my most recent B3ta pics are reached by clicking HERE under the umbrella
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:32, archived)
# yeah, i gathered that.
your gallery thing is showing up like this for me, if that's at all helpful.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:41, archived)
# snood is evil
it will overtake your mind, and you will be powerless to resist its fell call.

delete it from your system now
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:04, archived)
# it's too late,
i already shelled out my 15 bucks to register and get a nifty keychain.
i regret nothing.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:07, archived)
# you will now begin to see them
in your sleep

and you will draw doodles of them in the margins of restaurant menus and grandma's bible, etc.

(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:16, archived)
# it's actually not bad now.
when it's really bad is during the schoolyear...
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:19, archived)
# yes
their call is strongest when you have the most to lose -- they rejoice in disrupting studies, breaking concentration, and otherwise wreaking mental and emotional chaos in the normally-studious and responsible citizen. I have banned that game from my classroom some semesters, it takes over minds so fast.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:25, archived)
# eerily true.
computers are allowed in lecture halls at u of m, so you'd often see the kids in front of you with their laptops open in the middle of lecture, diligently playing snood.

we also had wireless internet in there, so some people would be downloading movie trailers or writing in their livejournals or whatnot during class. or, in my case, b3taing (and desperately hoping nothing NSFW came up).
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:29, archived)
# I could not possibly teach under those conditions

there would be no way!

I have to have interaction and participation and see a lot of active listening going on, or else the students get assigned some immediate work. I had the same kind of profs in several college classes back when I was at UF. They'd see us get distracted or tuning out, and "POW!", either a pop quiz or an extra essay, etc. -- teaching assistants just loved it, I'm sure.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:37, archived)
# it was stupid of them to hold lectures
in a room with wireless internet.

but they can't really do anything about it, the lectures are far too big to pay attention to individual students, unless they do something stupid like neglect to turn their cellphones off.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:39, archived)
# that's true
in lower division classes at UM, I'm sure it's as bad as it was at UF, with 500 to 1200 students in lectures. They'd have to pay me so much stinking money to teach in a room like that. I'd go nuts.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:43, archived)
# ayk!
maybe 500, but definitely not 1200! usually they're around 200.
1200 would be more like michigan state. apparently they have lectures where half the class isn't even in the same room as the lecturer, they have to watch him or her on a tv screen.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:48, archived)
# UF is like that
in a few classes.

Once a student hits second semester, second year, though, the class sizes usually drop dramatically. For me, I only had two classes of about 500. All the rest were "normal" (under 50). By the time I was a junior, I never had a class bigger than 30.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:59, archived)
# ah, see,
i never had a discussion session larger than 30. all my lectures were 200 or over.

but every art studio class was 20 or under, so as a freshman i lucked out.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 6:06, archived)
# if it's like a needed gallery for yoru site
then i'd recommend getting on ein just plain html/php/asp/all that gubbins, and try to avoid things like plugins and flash.
Just my opinion though.
If it's just a fancy extra/bonusy bit, then have it as whatever you want, it's just you limit your audience when you use flash and funny plugins and stuff.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:25, archived)
# it's asking me to install a
"viewpoint media player"
*distrustful of such things*
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:16, archived)
# sorry
don't know why

it's a 3D gallery of stuff I've seen on B3ta posted to my site.

Hoped it would work better
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:18, archived)
# i'm guessing that's what you need
to view the 3d-ness.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:20, archived)
# it's java
is it not?

I'm seeing it fine, though. It did spack out my entire system for about thirty seconds while it loaded, though.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:26, archived)
# its the 3D interactive gallery
in Adobe Photo Album

did you like it?
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:28, archived)
# it works great

I'm using IE 6.0 to see it now, and I'll try it out in Firefox, too, in a little bit. I get the whole musesum-looking interior and the pictures on the walls every so often, and when you click on them they show up in the panel space to the right. It's nice.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:38, archived)
# did you try the autotour?
I'm really glad it's working for someone
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:39, archived)
# yes, the autotour works fine
it moves the view all around and appears to function the way it was intended, which seems to be to show all the pictures on the walls in the different rooms of the gallery

EDIT: I am surprised that it doesn't have a toggle indicator with the mouse pointer as it moves to an edge of the viewer. I was expecting an up or down or left or right arrow, or something, so that I could direct my view.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:48, archived)
# I agree
I had expected that too. The auto tour is cool, but navigation is poor otherwise

thanks for all the comments
And helping with the test
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:54, archived)
# looking at the code it appears to have something to do with java
but i get a prompt asking me to install "The Viewpoint media player, a quick free download? by agreeing to this download you;re agreeing with terms etc etc etc blah blah blah"
It mentions something about adobe in there too.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:29, archived)
# see, i'm not getting any of these things.
just some text on the side and white. whitey white white.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:32, archived)
# Probably a safari thing
i very much doubt it, but maybe going directly to the page in the frame would work.
www.paws-and-claws.net/Gallery2/ThumbnailFrame.html
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:34, archived)
# Wow
I didn't even know you could do that

ha ha ha ha ha
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:38, archived)
# meh, nope,
makes no difference.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:42, archived)
# well
I'm stumped

Sorry it didn't work for you
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:47, archived)
# My guess...
is that your gallery only functions in IE, and only if you install an activeX component, which I'm afraid I wouldn't trust if my life depended on it. You've already installed the component, that's why you're not getting this message about "would you like to install" etc. etc.

The page is dead in the water if you're using a non-activeX browser, meaning it will not work with pretty much anything except IE.

/Edit When you say "it's a 3D gallery of stuff I've seen on B3ta posted to my site", do you mean other peoples' stuff?
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:48, archived)
# you are dead-on accurate
'cos it's frelled in Firefox.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:51, archived)
# damn
I knew it was too good to be true
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 4:52, archived)
# heh
sorry, but as stick figure said above, the more doodads you add, the less accessible you risk becoming. My own site is only available to certain browsers, because I wanted to use some newer web technologies on it and I didn't want to write a 'dumbed down' version, so I sympathise.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:00, archived)
# thanks
I like all the bells and whistles

I'll keep the limit in mind

Ah well
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:04, archived)
# of course you could make 2 versions
one normal baselined html, the other more shiny.

then let the user pick on an index page which site they'd like to see.... or else use some javascript to detect the user's browser and then load the appropriate version of the site.
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:09, archived)
# ahh
but that assumes I know what I'm doing

wish I did
(, Sun 27 Jun 2004, 5:15, archived)
# Holy crap!! That is way too cool.
Took about 45 seconds to load. Must be huge.

I must say that's my first virtual type of web experience. I've only just tried it, so I don't know what all is there. But whatever you did to do this, looks like it was a big project.
