dvd-rs are kind of volatile.
depending what type you burnt and where you store them, the discs can be useless within 3 years.
although its down to the dyes the discs have on their base

But in two years we'll have much higher capacity discs and faster burners, so it won't take two days of my life to do a back-up next time.

Assuming the make is decent. Mine have cost the best part of £200, for 560GB in total. They're all Seagate Barracudas though, and three of the four were bought brand new.
