# oh?
videotape yourself in wal-mart destroying a playstation.
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 6:55, archived)
# somehow...
...i think it'll be difficult enough to get away with without dragging a camera along and worrying about getting footage.
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 7:24, archived)
# umm...
get a friend to videotape you?
wow. i can't believe i'm still awake.
i should have gone to bed like 5 hours ago.
have to get up early tomorrow.
night everyone.

# ...
i have a policy about things like this -- don't drag your friends into it, just in case something goes wrong. if i get arrested (doubtful, but you never know) i can live with the consequences. i'd feel guilty getting a friend busted, though, and it's just easier to get away with crime and mischief* if you don't have to worry about other people.

and you're right -- time for bed.

*not that i live a criminal life, but we all have our moments.

# I take it this is something to do with the New Playstation?
or some advert by Playstation?

\Yoda voice "Mmmmmm... interesting, this is not."

Just take a photo of you smashing up a Playstation in your anger this will be pleasing in an expensive waste of game machine sort of way.

Either that or get a better spam filter, perhaps?

# D'oh!
I have the messageboard bookmarked so I hardly see the frontpage unless I'm looking to see who was fped.

Please accept my apologies.

So Sony are giving away a Playstation, that puts a bit more of a competitive edge on things.
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 7:18, archived)
# Hehe, no worries.
Sadly, it's brought out the worst in people and a large number of entries are just a random picture with the logo slapped onto it with not much thought. Hence this. :-)
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 7:20, archived)
# Yep that'll about sum it all up, tee hee.
But you would have thought the incentive of winning a New Playstation would have brought a creative element to this compo. I presume (can't be arsed to flick through the challenge entries) the Crudely Drawn Cock as bindun already?
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 7:34, archived)
# 39 pages of anti-entries already. Somehow,
I don't think this is quite how they thought the compo would turn out. :P

# what do you find so vile about sony.>
i dont understand how someone could hate a company because they try to make money..... just like anyone would....
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 8:58, archived)
# Not Sony specifically
though I personally think they make merely mildly competent kit, and spend more on advertising to hide the quality of the goods.

But a) b3ta is usually pretty anti-corporate in general, b) a bit anti-marketing (unless it's clever) and c) it's a crappy starting logo...
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 9:18, archived)
# why sony is vile:
there are more reasons than just these, but i'll give you a short list for starters.

1. unnecessary proprietary formats,
2. supporting the criminilisation of filesharing and the prosecution of filesharers,
3. the absurd (some would say schizophrenic), contradictory posistions and behaviour exhibited by various sony divisions, all because they're so damned scared that people might acquire a file they haven't paid for (see this wired article - www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.02/sony.html -and be amused),
4. sony (and other labels) deliberately establish subsidiary labels to circumvent established north american law and labour agreements, resulting in the ability to pay artists from marginalised groups far less than they would if the artists were signed to the parent label. sweatshops that produce recordings, not shoes, are still sweatshops, and
5. sony uses more tradionally defined sweatshop labour around the world. they've been indicted here and there, and indonesia recently forced them to rehire over a thousand employees at one plant who *gasp* dared to strike over intolerable working conditions and low (and non-payment of) wages.

i hope that helps to clarify things. that they're 'trying to make money' isn't the problem i have with sony or any other company. that the corporate overlords are immoral scumbags, however, is in needed of being pointed out.
(, Tue 24 May 2005, 6:05, archived)
# total respect
We need a hell of a lot more people thinking in this way, instead of having the vast majority of people being gullible enough to believe whatever the corporate monopolies tell us what to like and what to buy.
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 8:59, archived)
# i dont get it...
who really just buys stuff because ads tell them to? i never buy anything more than $50 unless ive researched and read reviews... and nothing over a few hundred unless ive used it myself....

•sony PSP... ive played it a bunch, and because of that, i know i wont buy one untill theres alot more games, and the price goes down.... i dont just go buy it..

•sony VX2100 handycam... $3000 camera. if i had that much money, wouldnt just go buy it cause i need a camera... but i have used it and would like it, so if i did have that miuch to spend, i would get it... ive used that camera for months and i know that its an excellent camera.. i dont want to buy it cause i saw adds... i want to because i know its good

edit:
and oh yeah, who would advertise their product and say-"this thing is great! but dont buy it if you find something better"
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 9:07, archived)
# yeah, true
I do the same. I buy things if I want them or need them. But look at the fashion industry. People go round looking like total twats cos they believe they look good. Look at the music industry of the last 10 years or so. Hardly anything with any musical merit gets in the charts. But it's all manufactured enough to make the non-thinkers buy it cos they are told it's the cool thing to do.
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 9:53, archived)
# okay... i totally agree with you there....
but i really dont think sony did anything wronge.... i think they just wanted to let the creative people of b3ta show off what they can do with their stuff.... and for everyone who is complaining about sony trying to get free advertising off of you--dont flatter yourself, they have billions, they dont need do look to you for free advertising. its like a big brother asks their little bro if he wants to help him paint a painting, its not that he needs help. he just want his little bro to feel included.
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 10:03, archived)
# ^agree
I do.
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 10:11, archived)
# Er,
I doubt Sony really cares about b3tans' artistic development. And it's this whole compo that's the advertisment, not just the winning entry.
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 10:14, archived)
# even still....
who can blame a company for advertising? and where in the compo do you see sony saying "BUY OUR SHIT!!!". you dont have to pay any attention to it... no one told you, you had to come to this site, or read the compo, or enter it. you dont want to see sony logos all over b3ta? then stop posting sony logos all over b3ta.
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 10:18, archived)
# another tuppence worth.
I can't blame Mr Manuel for caving in to selling advertising as suddenly and rapidly
as he seems to have. I imagine the poor sod is suddenly much richer than he needs to be and is
probably already too addicted to it to stop now. In time it will be banner ads and all the real talent will fuck off to a new site which will in time be corrupted and so on. You can't even blame sony - they wouldn't do it if it didn't work. Let's face, we, as a race, just suck. Just don't tell me pirate girl has done one for them. I would be sad.
(, Sun 22 May 2005, 20:51, archived)
# we agree, at least in part
note that i didn't state 'this compo sucks ass' and post a pic of the beloved mr. manuel with his head shopped on to an ass boil. what someone does with a website he owns is his business, though i would frequent a site less often if it started to become more corporation positive, particularly those corporations (like sony) which i despise. not that i am dismissing the emotional rejoinders posted here -- every b3tan deserves the opportunity to visit his or her opinion upon the rest of us on the board, and the challenges ask for our input, so to get cranky because a certain percentage of the input mocks b3ta or its client is both shortsighted and foolish.

note that i'm not mindlessly anti-corporate -- there are companies out there making decent products and not raping the environment and the rights of most of their employees and clients. perhaps there's room for b3ta to feature a future challenge which could benefit a not-for-profit organisation if mr. manuel feels the need to atone for this travesty.
