Talking of big files...

I run a forum with a large number of users who aren't skilled in the ways of resizing photos. Consequently they email them through to me (all 5mb) to I can resize the photos for them. I'm getting a little tired of this.

Is there a website, where you can upload large pics, and download a smaller version? (A bit like ImageShack does for hosting)
(, Tue 30 Aug 2005, 12:31, archived)
# flickr
(, Tue 30 Aug 2005, 12:32, archived)
# just write an upload function and put a 100K limit on it with a "fuck off, it`s too big" message if the file`s too large
(, Tue 30 Aug 2005, 12:33, archived)
# Well,
it's got that. What I'm wanting is a function to resize the originals from 2000+px wide to a mere 800px. I could do it myself, but it'll chew throught the bandwidth if it takes off, so I was wondering if the wheel had already been invented.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2005, 12:36, archived)
# aye flickr might do the job for you
but I think they have some kind of upload/bandwidth limit thing? dunno don`t really use it

wouldn`t be too hard to write a little php script to do it - it wouldn`t be any harder than your typical thumbnail creation script
(, Tue 30 Aug 2005, 12:38, archived)
# yeah 20mb a month
although i went pro, 2gigs a month.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2005, 12:39, archived)
# Yeah
I already have a thumbnail script I can adapt easily. Being a lazy sod, though, I'll look at the alternatives suggested here first!
(, Tue 30 Aug 2005, 12:50, archived)
# I use
Tinypic.com for all my hosting stuff. Is that what you're after?
(, Tue 30 Aug 2005, 12:38, archived)
# No
Well, it doesn't sound like it. I'm happy to host the photos, but they have to be down to a reasonable size first. That is, 800px wide and 50kb, not 2000+px wide and 800kb.

My members are currently geting me to resize them, but I wondered if there's a website so they could do it themselves.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2005, 12:41, archived)
# get them to uplaod them to tinypic
then save them from there
or teach the scrotes how to do it themselves
(, Tue 30 Aug 2005, 12:42, archived)
# Thanks
I'll look into it. How drastically is the quality reduced when the filesize is compressed?
(, Tue 30 Aug 2005, 12:47, archived)
# Tinypic doesn't
appear to affect the quality at all.
(, Tue 30 Aug 2005, 12:51, archived)
# ^ this
tinypic reduces your filesize automagically
but at a not uninconsiderable cost to quality
