pouring gravy is dangerous business
pour too little and you don't get sufficient moistness and flavour ... pour to much and you end up with your dilemma.

However this only is true of the Chips/Beans/Gravy combo...in all other situations there is no meaning to the term "too much gravy"

This is true
especially where yorkshire puds / dumplings are concerned. Any excess can be mopped up with tasty bread.
