i was having a mac/pc argument with my housemate the other dayhe was claiming that macs are better for music because they 'are designed for it' talking out of his arse..

Well,Back in the days, Mac used to make specifically-specced music studio computers (they probably still do). But the fact is that you can buy the bits to make a PC the same spec nowadays for a fraction of the cost.

Well...(he started warily) ..... even though Logic Audio (and CuBase, etc etc) used to be a primarily PC-based product, it was designed (coded) on Macs due to the board-level integration of all audio input/output. Whereas on a PC, the sound card could be one of several dozen different sorts.
I think having a 'standard' sound card that the code could talk to might have been the reason for this semi-urban myth to have stuck around for so long.

the only reason a mac is better at audio than a PCis coz they are quiet in the studio.
most high end pcs in music production tend to have had a fair amount of noise suppression bits added to them, as they are noisy buggers.
but our studio uses 5 PC's and we would not have a mac around the place, anyway Atari ST's were used before macs....

You can make completely silent high end PCs if you care enough though.

yep that was more or less my point really...My own I just added a decent PSU, a couple of artic cooling fans and a hard drive accoustic sleeve.. job done, total cost around £90 on top of the PC's price. My mate went overboard, and actually built a soundproof cupboard complete with air extractors out through the wall!!

Liquid cooling is a good start.I have one of those 120mm Zalman copper coolers but it's still not silent. Virtually silent PSU (though that was £70 :/ ).
The real problem was cooling on my graphics card.. stock cooler wasn't good enough so I ended up putting a noisy one on, thus undoing all my hard work...
However you can get fanless PSUs, cool you cpu/gfx with water and then it's just the hard drives I guess.
Which HD sleves did you use? Did they work well?

Modern macs are based on unixwhich wasn't designed for music, just beards
Edit: Thinking about it, if macs were designed for producing music, why did they sign a contract with Apple records that they would never get into the music business? (years later the first sample included was called sosumi in defiance of this)
