# I'm a bit pissed off this morning
Found that management had installed NetOp on my machine without telling me
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:47, archived)
# Oh joys :/
If I recall correctly that's some sort of sniffer program isn't it? Monitors your internet usage?
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:47, archived)
# EEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPSSSSSSSSSSSS!
Not the Fun Police!!!???!
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:49, archived)
# That'd be the buggers.
I hate the fun police.
However NetOp might not be what I think it is...
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:50, archived)
# Well a quick google suggests that it's some kind of remote desktop thing
So I'd put money on it being a tool of the fun police.

# a lunch time mini-bash?
where are you?
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:57, archived)
# Nah I meant one of the big ones.
I might even put one on myself at some point in the near future...

Who here lives near Bristol?
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:58, archived)
# nope. hampshire.
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:59, archived)
# Is Bristol near Leeds?

(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 10:05, archived)
# Uh.... not exactly.
You have a car?
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 10:06, archived)
# Haha yes
It was password-protected too so I couldn't turn it off...

so I did a search for the executable files, stopped them running as processes and then uninstalled the bloody thing. I expect I'll get a call about that at some point.
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:49, archived)
# oh dear.
don't get fired will you.
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:50, archived)
# Hurrah!
Workarounds are always handy :)
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:50, archived)
# Yeah
they're really going to have to try harder than that if they want to catch me spending all day on b3ta
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:52, archived)
# ummm
NetOP is not for spying but for remote control and configuration, like DameWare, iirc
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:58, archived)
# Ah you're right
I wasn't entirely sure.
On the other hand those programs can be used to monitor your usage simply by sharing your desktop...
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 10:00, archived)
# I suspect this is the case
I think management jsut want to be able to look at what I'm doing at any given moment.

The fact that it was installed overnight without a word to me is also kinda suspicious
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 10:03, archived)
# Unfortunately you have to expect it really.
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 10:05, archived)
# Indeed :)

# reacharounds are better tho....
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:56, archived)
# Sorry but from being ex IT
You have to remember it's not your machine, it's the companies. Well that's the way they se it anyway.

Looking for a new job.

# You could join the militant wing of the Salvation Army!
*sharpens tamborine*
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:56, archived)
# Yeah but surely you've got a right to know if you're being monitored?
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:57, archived)
# No you don't actually
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:58, archived)
# Ok
Poop
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 10:16, archived)
# erm
yes you do
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 10:38, archived)
# Nope.
Basically, whenever you use a PC in an office, you should expect to be monitored.
It's all in the 'Internet Usage' policy thing...

I know this because I've caused several people to get fired (I actually installed the monitoring software - and monitor it ;)
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:59, archived)
# I'll just say that I thought my machine was in danger of being hacked
They never mentioned they were going to put monitoring software on my PC, so I was concerned that it was an unauthorised attempt to gain access to company information.
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:59, archived)
# Yeah. Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends.
The naughty lil chappy on the right is called Cheese.
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:47, archived)

That'd be why he's saying 'cheese' then?
(, Wed 14 Mar 2007, 9:48, archived)
