TJ: Anyone know how to stop pic and sound going out of sync on .avi files?

# One word...
mpg
(, Sun 29 Apr 2007, 20:01, archived)
# But I want to watch it NOW dammit!
I might have some conversion software on here somewhere. I'll give that a go.
(, Sun 29 Apr 2007, 20:05, archived)
# Might not work
but definitely worth a try.
(, Sun 29 Apr 2007, 20:05, archived)
# depends what the frame rate and audio rate was when they were ripped...
that's 'if' you're playing a downloaded .avi
I had that trouble in trying to burn some .avi files to DVD with nero, the
video and audio went out of sync, although in windows media player it played fine.
In the end, I bought a divX dvd player for £30... and it did the trick...
Then won another one via ZOO

# I have no idea how to tell what the frame and audio rate are or were.
Yes it's a downloaded one.
(, Sun 29 Apr 2007, 20:05, archived)
# hmmm, you trying to play it on a dvd player?
(ie you've converted it using nero or something similar?)

(, Sun 29 Apr 2007, 20:07, archived)
# Not yet
I was hoping to get it working OK in Media Player before wasting a DVD. I might try it anyway.

# hmm, strange if it isn't in sync before burning,
sounds like a duff download maybe? - anything good?

May I recommend also getting 'the Host' great little Korean film I watched yesterday,
really enjoyed it!

# My copy should be on its way :)
It's only the pilot episode of Battlestar Galactica. Just annoying because I was halfway through watching it when it started going out of sync.

# ahhh right, yes, I have quite a number of BG, but haven't got around to starting any of them yet...
/I don't usually 'do' subtitle movies, (for shame) but upon a freind's recommendation, got 'the host' and
was really impressed, it works really well,
hope you enjoy it.
(, Sun 29 Apr 2007, 20:19, archived)
# Yeah
The Host sounds pretty cool. I'm looking forward to it.

I'll try converting the BG pilot for my PSP, see if that works. I don't particularly want to keep it, I'll probably buy it at some point, I just want to see the end of it now I've started watching it!!

# update your audio codecs sometimes works
(, Sun 29 Apr 2007, 20:03, archived)
# Tried that
no joy.

# i'm sure i read somewhere
that the speed of light can be bent thus changing it, do this untill the picture matches the sound

# Good plan
*gets prisms and mirrors*

I've actually just been reading Isaac Newton's book on Optics so this should be a doddle.

# Yeah
It's called SMPTE time coding
(, Sun 29 Apr 2007, 20:18, archived)
# I'll have a look
ta.
(, Sun 29 Apr 2007, 20:20, archived)
# If you're interested in spending about £300
You can get a Digidesign M Box and that will let you use Protools le. That has SMPTE built in and will allow you to do basic Post Production.
(, Sun 29 Apr 2007, 20:25, archived)
# Cheaper
to just buy the DVDs.
(, Sun 29 Apr 2007, 20:29, archived)
# Or create photoshopped images, post them here, and win the dvds from ZOO magazine ;)
(, Sun 29 Apr 2007, 20:39, archived)
# And what would you like to win this week?
Smartarse:P
(, Sun 29 Apr 2007, 20:44, archived)
# a 42" hd ready tv please Bob

# You get the cuddly toy.
(, Sun 29 Apr 2007, 20:57, archived)
# Ah OK I thought you were trying to sort out animations etc
If you have a pirate is probably is filmed in a cinema. SMPTE is a frame by frame encoding used in production.

# Check your avi doesn't have vbr audio.
Constant Bit Rate only, as avi is old and they didn't have such fancy audio encoding back in the day.
VBR will go out of sync, CBR will not.

Of course, correcting the avi you have, nightmare.
