that's 'if' you're playing a downloaded .avi
I had that trouble in trying to burn some .avi files to DVD with nero, the
video and audio went out of sync, although in windows media player it played fine.
In the end, I bought a divX dvd player for £30... and it did the trick...
Then won another one via ZOO

I'll try converting the BG pilot for my PSP, see if that works. I don't particularly want to keep it, I'll probably buy it at some point, I just want to see the end of it now I've started watching it!!

You can get a Digidesign M Box and that will let you use Protools le. That has SMPTE built in and will allow you to do basic Post Production.

If you have a pirate is probably is filmed in a cinema. SMPTE is a frame by frame encoding used in production.

# Check your avi doesn't have vbr audio.
Constant Bit Rate only, as avi is old and they didn't have such fancy audio encoding back in the day.
VBR will go out of sync, CBR will not.

Of course, correcting the avi you have, nightmare.
