the problem with .gif is that the transparency has to be all or nothing; what you want is .png. While it doesn't work in IE, it's better than nothing.

See? Sadly the file-size is usually quite big.
okay so I put the shadow too dark, but you get the idea.

I did experiment with levels of transparency, but I rather liked it as it was.

However, the shadowing there looks very nice.
