Yeah, um
the problem with .gif is that the transparency has to be all or nothing; what you want is .png. While it doesn't work in IE, it's better than nothing. See? Sadly the file-size is usually quite big. okay so I put the shadow too dark, but you get the idea.

I did experiment with levels of transparency, but I rather liked it as it was.
However, the shadowing there looks very nice.

gifs always give you a white outline or jagged edges
which look horrible no matter what

IE7 supports PNG format.
I'm getting tired of hearing how PNG files are huge. They're just badly optimised! PNG and file size
