Well, think about it in these terms - you could try to blag a new one for Christmas.
It's a plan (of sorts).
Edit: I'm still trying to decide whether the PS3 is actually worth the money ('cos I'm not overly fussed about having a Blu-Ray player, frankly)

I'm worried that my decision on this is largely dependent on GTA IV

But apparently it is also coming out on the 360 so I had the unpleasant idea pop into my head that I might buy microsoft...

When GTA IV comes out, if it's cack, the whole shebang is being sold.

But then my brother came to stay while I was off work and brought his.
One week later and I've done nothing else.
But they're so bloody expensive, it's unreal!

So they'll drop again next year sometime. I'm hoping they are affordable by the time GTA IV actually gets released.

and I'd be VERY surprised if they didn't know that, so I wouldn't expect the console to get to a reasonable price until the game sales peter off

For Gran Turismo (dowloaded the latest demo from Japan last night. That was fun, all those picture-letters) and Metal Gear more than anything.
They're getting to be a good deal now I reckon. Just watch what you get. My 60gb model has actual hardware for playing PS2 and PS1 games inside, instead of emulation stuff the new ones have, so I lucked out.
Plus I like the fact that wireless is built-in, as is Blu-ray (you need to pay extra for both and they're both external on the 360, it all adds up) and the firmware updates are adding more and more interesting things. You can also upgrade the hard drive with any 2.5" HDD you like, and it reinstalls stuff all by itself, without invalidating the warrenty.
And, you need to pay for X-Box Live on the 360, not sure how much, but all online stuff on the PS3 is free too.

the new cheap 40 gig ones don't do backward compatability *at all*. not even in software.

Jeez. Shows you really need to keep an eye on the specs. All these models are great, but they are difficult to keep track of!

I have a firend with a PS3 and it's also brilliant, but virtually none of the games on the PS3 are native... however, GT5HD will be very good and MGSIV will possibly be the best game ever... so, there you go.
