# TOAP i know
but my 360 died last night :( 2 years without a single problem then bam... *jumps on microsoft hating bandwagon* unrelidable piece of crap

# Do you have to send it off to Microsoft to get it relidded?
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:36, archived)
# got it all boxed up
they'll fix it free of charge because its all their blooming fault for making it badly
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:37, archived)
# Oh dear.
They try though. That's the main thing.

I remember reading that when the 360 was first released, a lot of people could only play on it for more than ten minutes by suspending the power supply off the floor so that it cooled better.
This must mean that the Xbox is designed and built by polar bears, otherwise you'd think that this heating problem would get noticed at some point in the testing stage.

I have a Wii. I like the Wii.

Well, think about it in these terms - you could try to blag a new one for Christmas.

It's a plan (of sorts).

Edit: I'm still trying to decide whether the PS3 is actually worth the money ('cos I'm not overly fussed about having a Blu-Ray player, frankly)

I'm worried that my decision on this is largely dependent on GTA IV

# ^This
But apparently it is also coming out on the 360 so I had the unpleasant idea pop into my head that I might buy microsoft...
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:45, archived)
# The fate of my 360 rests on the same decision.
When GTA IV comes out, if it's cack, the whole shebang is being sold.

# I wasn't going to
But then my brother came to stay while I was off work and brought his.

One week later and I've done nothing else.

But they're so bloody expensive, it's unreal!
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:43, archived)
# They've gone down to £300 for the 40gb one.
So they'll drop again next year sometime. I'm hoping they are affordable by the time GTA IV actually gets released.
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:46, archived)
# I think this, hopefully.
But I'm impatient.
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:56, archived)
# There will be quite a few people waiting on that game
and I'd be VERY surprised if they didn't know that, so I wouldn't expect the console to get to a reasonable price until the game sales peter off
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:56, archived)
# I got my PS3
For Gran Turismo (dowloaded the latest demo from Japan last night. That was fun, all those picture-letters) and Metal Gear more than anything.

They're getting to be a good deal now I reckon. Just watch what you get. My 60gb model has actual hardware for playing PS2 and PS1 games inside, instead of emulation stuff the new ones have, so I lucked out.

Plus I like the fact that wireless is built-in, as is Blu-ray (you need to pay extra for both and they're both external on the 360, it all adds up) and the firmware updates are adding more and more interesting things. You can also upgrade the hard drive with any 2.5" HDD you like, and it reinstalls stuff all by itself, without invalidating the warrenty.

And, you need to pay for X-Box Live on the 360, not sure how much, but all online stuff on the PS3 is free too.
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 11:01, archived)
# In fact
the new cheap 40 gig ones don't do backward compatability *at all*. not even in software.
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 11:10, archived)
# Really?
Jeez. Shows you really need to keep an eye on the specs. All these models are great, but they are difficult to keep track of!
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 11:12, archived)
# I have a seXbOX and it's brilliant
I have a firend with a PS3 and it's also brilliant, but virtually none of the games on the PS3 are native... however, GT5HD will be very good and MGSIV will possibly be the best game ever... so, there you go.
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:49, archived)
# Sold me Xbox 360 yesterday...
was given a ps2 and some monies back for it too. Too busy running a guild on WoW at the mo to play the thing (was a freebie console so it's all profit :D)
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:49, archived)
# Depends on the games
frankly, there are few real exclusives on the PS3 at the moment. If any of them is a must-have, then go for it.

Word has it that there are quite a few multi-platform games that go worse on the PS3 than the 360 (eg HL Orange Box)

and -- I thought M$ had a huge fund of money to replace every single XbOX360 because they over heat too much...?
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:44, archived)
# they never planned to make money out of the hardware
but only on the games, services and accessories. So it's no big deal to replace them.
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:48, archived)
# Aww, unlucky
as all the good games are coming out now, too.

Still, maybe it's royally fucked and they will send you an upgraded model as a replacement!

# I shouldn't
but I'm laughing at your misfortune!
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:45, archived)
# There's someone on ebay who can fix it for about £45
no idea who though. The likelihood is that the ships have come loose on the motherboard; if it's out of warrenty open it up and press every chip back onto the main motherboard then re-power up (sounds bollocks, but that's how 90% of them are fixed by Microsoft)
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:45, archived)
# i fixed mine myself
quite easy once its opened up.
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:49, archived)
# I was looking into soft-modding it
Apparenly if you have a SATA port on your motherboard in your home pc, you can remove the DVD drive from the console and connect it to the SATA port - it's possible to flash the DVD drive to play backups through a floppy boot disk by doing this.

Found an 8meg word doc on it (pics included). Not got an Xbox anymore though lol
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:53, archived)
# mine is soft modded
its really easy to do. Hence the reason i fixed mine myself cos microshaft didnt want to know! :b

If you need any advice let me know.

...will earn another freebie one of the net :)

# mines covered by warranty
if its the 3 red ring problem then its free, which is nice of them.. its not too bad, just annoying i was looking foward to playing a bit of rainbow 6 and it doesn't work.

saw a thing on youtube about fixing it by purposly overheating it by wrapping it in a towel dont think i want to do that.. can just see my house burning down if i try
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:53, archived)
# The prob is the motherboard is jammed in the case of the first few batches
When the console heats up and the DVD drive is used, the motherboard vibrates slightly off the external casing and eventually shakes the chips from the motherboard. The console BIOS spacks out and gives 3 lovely rings of death. They've sorted it to a much better degree in the latest batch of consoles plus as it's their fault you should be given a replacement free of charge too.
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:56, archived)
# the towel trick is BAD
you only need to slightly overheat the GPU memory chips and let them cool. Too much heat elsewhere will fry other components.
(, Thu 29 Nov 2007, 10:58, archived)
# had the same thing
sent it to MS, waited 4 weeks.. tada, new console
