# I just got back from the supermarket
and they had a LazyTown DVD. I nearly bought it...

# WRONG!!!!!!

# Yeah well trust me.
I've lived in England and I've lived in Australia and Aussie can't barbeque for shit!
They're so bad that have to use gas! They also feel perfectly happy to throw the word pom around with the same venom as someone would use with the word packie.
(, Sun 25 May 2008, 9:58, archived)
# I don't see a problem with either to be honest
I do remember someone taking his case to have the word pom banned by the United Nations. Most of the time though, pom isn't supposed to be offensive, neither is the use of the word wog, bastard, prick or cunt. We're just being friendly...

# Yeah erm word to the wise
Most of the people her are from England and wog is probably the most offencively racist word around, I know it means something different in Oz.
Also I live in Australia for 3-4 years it is perfectly acceptable to constantly make snide comments about English people. If you changed the word Pom for Aboriginie and kept the context the same people would be much more shocked and offended.
99% of Australians that called me a pom would get completly irate if I called the a convict back.
(, Sun 25 May 2008, 10:06, archived)
# zoinks it's certianly not that bad here...
And I'll concede there are arseholes everywhere, but not everyone is. I don't use the term pom to cause offense, it's kind of jocular. Sure call an Aussie a convict. I don't give a shit, it's our heritage. As for snide remarks about Aborigines, again it really depends on context as to whether or not it is offensive/shocking etc.

I'm also half Scot, talk with an accent and get shit from both sides...

# I'm just going by observation. It's perfectly acceptable in the meadia too.
I loved living in Australian and I loved the people but if you're English and there's an Australian who's pissed off at you, you can gaurantee that words 'fucking pom' will be mentioned and maybe two thirds of the time the tyrade will detour off into English people in general.
(, Sun 25 May 2008, 10:25, archived)
# That's a top description of Aus,
but it wouldn't matter what you were. If you were from Queensland you'd be a farking Banana Benda, from Western Sydney, you'd be a bloody Westie Bogan, it would't matter you were from the other side of the street you'd still get something.

But half the time, the people don't stay irate for very long and you can go have a beer and a laugh afterwards. If you can't they're just plain cunts, and they're everywhere in the world sadly.

# just do what I did
and tell the Aussie how POME means 'prisoner of mother england' which actually refers to the convicts themselves. So in essence, a pome is actually an Aussie...the look on their face is priceless!
(, Sun 25 May 2008, 10:32, archived)
# yah no-one is quite sure of the entomology
I think that POME or POHM is largely accepted as a bacronym. OED goes for the pomegranate story, but I think the origins are probably lost to history.
(, Sun 25 May 2008, 10:39, archived)
# Naaa
Just just said they were pissed off coz they were like New Zealand but without the culture:P
(, Sun 25 May 2008, 10:50, archived)
# I think you'll find you'd get the same effect in the UK with Americans
and "Fuckin Yanks".

I know quite few people here in Grimsby got irate at being called Codheads in the middle of a football match commentary. I'm proud of being a Codhead, even though its meant as a bit of an insult.
(, Sun 25 May 2008, 10:50, archived)
# Yeah
But they fucking deserve it! That's not hypocrasy that's just how the world feels about them!!!
(, Sun 25 May 2008, 10:51, archived)
# HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHaha
OH THE IRONY!
(, Sun 25 May 2008, 11:16, archived)
# I'm going to have to take exception to that
I've never heard of anyone going out "to bash some poms".

There's a profound difference between using a derogatory term for a group of people who have been exploited throughout history versus using a derogatory term for a group of people who have exploited people throughout history.
(, Sun 25 May 2008, 12:09, archived)
# In your mind at least.
(, Sun 25 May 2008, 13:01, archived)
# Yes, let's trivialise the human rights abuses and wholesale slaughter of the past
by assuming that making fun of someone from england is just as bad.
(, Sun 25 May 2008, 13:10, archived)
# Strange
I can't remember the last time I exploited someone.
(, Sun 25 May 2008, 13:16, archived)
# yes and there aren't slaves in most modern countries either.
but if you use a derogatory term for someone whose grandparents might have been slaves, you're bringing up a whole world of emotions for that person.

English people haven't had a bad run. It'd be nice if we lived in a world where black skin or big noses or ginger hair were all just thrown around as innocent ribbing, but some words have centuries of hatred behind them.

Sorry if you don't like being called a pom, but it's really not that bad in the scheme of things. I'm sure you can mull it over while you eat your delicious dinner and sleep in your comfortable bed.
