the pentadactyl limb may have been 'fixed' as a design even though it is no more advantageous than the 4- or 6- (tetra/hexa) equivalent.

I can imagine some kind of double-bladed curved weapon (like that klingon batleth?) that would fit nicely in a double-thumbed hand. hmmm.
