people want to see a variety of images and they do not really browse sites, per-se, they mostly follow links from search engines - you are unlikely to win many users with a page which makes them click again. This is what I do, so I am a bit anal about it.
The original image is much nicer in my humble opinion than this one. I am fond of contrast.

I toned down the image itself so I could display the title against it, but I agree, I prefer the original. I'll make another stab at it later anyway, probably ditching the splash. Thanks for the advise!
