although i think most of us do a fair bit of all that stuff without the base drawing or any clear idea of where the image is going anyway.
i make it up as i go along, i expect it shows.

It does read a little like that yes :(
but that's down to it being written in a style more suited to the writing of a blog than a tutorial.
In fact, I wouldn't go so far as to call it a tutorial, it is only an explanation of basic photoshop techniques used.
Still, interesting to see the final piece and read the explanation, it's a cracking end result as well :)

it's more of a
"I'm sick of you mere plebeians commenting that I don't make my own material so just to shut you up before you get the chance to start here's a brief overview of how I'm so much better at this than you".
As I said. If you want to show your working out then it's supposed to go in the margin. Or link to it on your blog/tutorial site.
