# Preacher
Photobucket

This was a tough one, the order was for a sweaty fancy pants warthog evangelist preaching fire and brimstone. Started with a sketch with soft prismacolor pencil on tracing paper. Here you can see it was very rough, but that is all i needed to go by, as I layed the warthog skin in it is easier to see the dimensions and angles of the head. Funny that I don't draw well, but I can paint great. Go figure.

So i pulled reference off of google images, found plenty of great warthogs, and drew my sketch from these, and found high res pics for the skin texture, but never could find a good nose, so I took a pig snout and angled it, and colored it to fit. The tusks were made by simply bending photos into place and airbrushing.

As you see in the original drawing i had a microphone, but it is best to take out anything that is distracting and not helping the momentum of the piece along, so I went for a finger pointing at heaven instead. And comparing the two you can see I was able to give it a stronger more aggressive mouth and jaw.

Could not find a bible in the correct position so had to draw and paint one, same with the pulpit, simplified it way down. Cut up a wood grain pic to build it. Same with the stage floor, just wood grain colorized.

Used actual warthog skin and hair, cloned it off a high res pic, and then added the fine hairs to bring it up nice and nasty. The sweat rolling around the warthog skin I always thought was a lovely touch. And the spit blasting out. The tongue was modeled from a pic of a dog's tongue, and the teeth too. The ears were taken right off of a pic of a warthog.

I Freehanded the fancy suit, and the audience, although they look pretty half baked, could not really figure out how a warthog looked from that angle.

Chose the hot white lighting to pop the darker warthog away from the background, and the cool blues and purples to contrast the yellow and brown preacher.

That is all it is to it. Start with a sketch and then bend photographs into the lines, cloning various textures, and layers, ended up with about 50 layers usually.

Composition is the key to a strong piece. People tend to read left to right, so i design that way, here, I have the light beam moving left to right.

Cut away dead space, unless you need it for effect. Think of the whole piece in percentages. And treat it all like a communication, let the main image take the greatest percentage of piece, and drop less important parts way back in percentage of the overall image, into a secondary size. Exaggerate the size of things you want to stand out. In this case I went for a big ugly snout, eyes, and tusks.

Good luck and happy painting.

If you're going to make a habit of this (and don't get me wrong I'm sure that the tutorial side of things is appreciated by people who know more about photoshopping than I), then it might be worth your while setting up a blog or something with the tutorials on them, and you can link to it from here.

Even this number of words is making me feel a bit dizzy...

# It does read a little like that yes :(
but that's down to it being written in a style more suited to the writing of a blog than a tutorial.
In fact, I wouldn't go so far as to call it a tutorial, it is only an explanation of basic photoshop techniques used.
Still, interesting to see the final piece and read the explanation, it's a cracking end result as well :)
