# I should be seeing him in july
(, Tue 14 Apr 2009, 0:48, archived)
# He's not very funny, though is he?
I mean, the political rants he goes on on stage are very interesting, but not comedy as such.

Like when he was standing in front of a giant flowchart of the PPP situation with british rail, and the various companies that own different bits of the ... mess.

Fascinating. But not funny.

# I suppose he is the stand-up equivalent of Private Eye
He was on Newsnight a couple of weeks ago going on about how important it is to destroy tax havens. Wrong. End. Of. Stick.
(, Tue 14 Apr 2009, 0:59, archived)
# This is the exact comparison I thought of : just like Private Eye. Weird.
(, Tue 14 Apr 2009, 1:03, archived)
# He can at times be extremely funny,
but I think that he, as with Stewart Lee, aren't really as funny as when they were younger and angrier.
(, Tue 14 Apr 2009, 1:00, archived)
# Ugh! I saw Stewart Lee on TV the other day
pointing his face at the camera and saying stuff about people who were watching on flat screen tvs that they don't own.

There was anger, but it was quite unpleasant and bitter. He can definitely be funny, but not when he has ....huge...pauses....for...things...to ...sink...in....

# yay for people living in black and white worlds of perfect simplicity
:D

# I didn't get on with him in this new show.
telling me lots of things that really don't concern me ( like how much money I have not got and goods and chattels etc. ) and I don't think that they concern him too much.
(, Tue 14 Apr 2009, 1:09, archived)
# haven't seen it
but if it was filled with bandwagon humping holier than thou hubris I haven't missed anything.

# There were parts of that show,
and throughout the series, that have been brilliant, but so much of it is gone now. It was like when Ben Elton made a brief comeback in the 90s. Not as funny without Thatcher.

However, for his PC gone mad skit, he will forever go down in history.

# That is a great segment.
I encourage everyone to somehow watch or listen to his three most famous shows; 41st Best Stand Up Ever, Stand Up Comedian and 90s Comedian. They're all brilliant.

# He has his place,
but more as a comic political activist as far as I am concerned, not as a comedian.

Now this dude is a fucking comedian!

All three comedians work on the basis of slagging off a common enemy.

None are terribly funny, they just say 'The government are cunts' and et a cheer. Thomas is the worst of the three. Frankly I do not see the appeal at all.

Elton writes excellent insightful novels though.
(, Tue 14 Apr 2009, 1:15, archived)
# I think this is the problem.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying the current government are perfect, far from it, but compared to the Thatcher years, it is not so easy to all gang up on one hate figure.

# Especially now with Bush gone... a sad day for political comedy.
(, Tue 14 Apr 2009, 1:24, archived)
# Meh,
Bush was an easy target and took no thought whatsoever. At least to attack someone like Thatcher on any kind of level you had to think first....
(, Tue 14 Apr 2009, 1:30, archived)
# Bollocks.
Elton just went 'Thatcher is a git' and then did a camp laugh.
(, Tue 14 Apr 2009, 1:46, archived)
# In the words of Rich Hall..
Well, taking the piss out of Bush is easy and anyone can do it... so here we go.

# The trouble with a lot of government
criticism, comedic or not, is that it's based upon blaming the 'government' for things that were going to happen anyway and that as government they had no control over the outcome.
It's better to see how they deal with the situations thrown at them and then judge.

Thatcher may have introduced some shit, but she didn't have the easiest term and at least she made decisions.

Argentina invaded British soil
We had a huge national debt
The unions were so powerful that it was out of hand
People kept on hijacking planes
PIRA kept bombing folk.

We didn't get ID cards and stop fucking cops attacking protesters.

# We did have ID card before thatcher though
it's not like it would have or will be a new thing

# I think that the World War represented a greater threat
than a tube explosion which killed 51 people.

(, Tue 14 Apr 2009, 1:45, archived)
# We had them after WW2
Churchill planned to get rid of them but Labour got in before it was too late, I think we had them into the late 50's.
(, Tue 14 Apr 2009, 1:48, archived)
# Indeed.
And I think that the World War represented a greater threat than a tube explosion which killed 51 people.

# sorry I didn't know whever you meant just in the war or not

I am generally a bit of an arsey sod.

They came in as a result of the wars and remained.
(, Tue 14 Apr 2009, 1:52, archived)
# that's my point
I'm confused.

# I love Stewart Lee, but I'm really surprised the BBC commissioned this current series
It's not really like any other comedy out there. Some of it is incredibly deep satire which I imagine is lost on a lot of people. He also isn't as good cut into 30 minute segments; some of his best shows have had a joke running through them for over and hour. It was brave of them.

Although the red button interviews with Armando Iannucci after each show are hilarious... Frost/Nixon-esque

# He's interesting
and astute with a good eye for the absurd but not my idea of a comedian.

# Live, he's hilarious
Witty AND intelligent. Scary combo.
