I have 2 cards in my pc (@4 years old) in SLI mode
they double the frame rate of games but prevent you using 2 monitors (which I can do with one card removed) . At the time buying one card of equal performance to my 2 sli cards cost£100+ than the 2 cards. Now you can get sli on 1 card but I dont know about them

umm I have a crossfire card which is basically like a SLI (ATI/nVidia)
1. games sort of need to be designed to take advantage of multiple video cards. 2. You won't see much improvement otherwise
3.motherboard must support multiple video cards. (SLI/Crossfire)
4. They need to be the same card make.
5. More power to run 2 video cards, which means a better, more powerful power supply.
6. I'd just buy the best Graphics card you can get and save yourself some money
7. You'll probably just ignore this.
