He's good at what he does. But, as your post indicates, I think that there's a gap between what he does and the praise heaped on him.
He's a reasonably clever, reasonably quick-witted person. But then, so are many others. With luck, Stephen Fry will turn into Clement Freud as the years pass.
EDIT: I like Hermione Eyre and Willie Donaldson's definition of Fry: "A stupid person's idea of a clever person".

As far as charmingly lovely goes I'd take Fry over anyone else on TV. how can you not love a man who says "Wo ist meine Handy?"
