As the symptoms are essentially the same as regular flu, it's tricky to identify a new strain before it's spread quite a way.
It is being hugely hyped up at the moment, but just because it's currently pretty tame doesn't mean it'll stay that way.

It's good that the authorities are taking it seriously and making plans, but individuals panicking probably doesn't help much.
But if it makes people cover their mouths/noses when they cough or sneeze, then it's a good thing.
